My daughter (8) is arts and craft mad, so she jumped at the chance to review the Gabby Dollhouse Cat Mystery Box Clay. This kit gives you the opportunity to make and decorate clay cupcakes and doughnuts.
The contents of the kit are neatly packed into a cat-shaped 4 inch square storage box with a cardboard sleeve around it so there are absolutely no concerns about excess packaging. The storage box itself can be kept and used for trinkets etc long after the product has been used!
The kit contains the ‘ingredients’ to make and decorate pretend cakes. You receive cake moulds, 3 different coloured clays, a bag of confetti decoration, some cardboard decorations and a cat cake topper. All brightly coloured and definitely appealing to the eye.
Having already had the Gabby’s Dollhouse Mystery Cat Box Slime, I’m still perplexed why these products have ‘Mystery’ on the label whilst the contents are quite clearly displayed on the sleeve! This made absolutely no impact on my daughter who didn’t even notice, just one of those questions that puzzled me.
We opened the product at the kitchen table on a wipe-clean cloth with easy to hoover lino floor. The clay itself is not particularly messy but the confetti decorations seem to scatter themselves around a bit. Younger children will require some help setting up and opening packets to minimise mess!
The kit contains clear and precise instructions. My daughter did require help at the moulding stage. She found it difficult getting the clay out of the mould without squashing it. To be fair, so did I, and the fact it is quite small I think makes it harder. After a few failed attempts, I did perfect a technique, but had to stay on hand for each one.
Once the clay cakes were made, my daughter enjoyed decorating them with confetti sprinkles and the cardboard decorations. She took time choosing her designs and trying different things, but then she is a creator and this is where her imaginative play really comes through. I think less creative children could just pop the decorations on and be done in a short space of time!
The clay airdries, so once she had completed all of her cakes – she had enough clay to make 8 – we put them aside to let them dry out. We left them for a couple of days before she went back to them. This product kept her entertained for approximately an hour and a half, but I also had to be on hand for half of that to help with the moulding.
Overall, my daughter really enjoyed the creativity of this product. The presentation was good and would make a cute gift for someone. Given that the clay is airdried, it is a one use only product, however you could buy more clay and decorations and use the mould over and over again. Plus as I have previously said, the storage box is great to use. My daughter has also kept her now dry cakes to use at ‘tea parties’ with her toys.
