I was invited to review Funny Girl playing at Milton Keynes on Wednesday 1st March. I haven’t been to Milton Keynes for sometime, the theatre is modern with good surrounding parking. My seat was in the stalls with a good view of the stage. I was ready. I had been nervous all day, I had been wanting to see this show since I heard about it opening, as someone raised on Barbara Streisand, so a lifelong fan, a few of my favourite songs were in the show, So I wanted to love it. The audience was very mixed in age, I was surprised that there were men women and children attending.
Sheridan Smith… a star is born. I was truly mesmerised, her facial expressions, her presence, her voice. All credit to Sheridan, her voice is amazing, she certainly did the big numbers ‘People’ and ‘Don’t rain on my Parade’ justice.
The musical tells the story of Fanny Brice, her rise to fame and the love of her life. I don’t think anyone in the show let the side down, everyone was magnificent, word perfect and had voices that were wonderful. Costumes fitted with the story. I’m probably not a fan of Sheridan’s Brooklyn accent but it was fairly authentic! There was something of everything, some great all cast dancing along with some tutu’s and ballet! I loved the feel of the show, hard to explain but felt I was watching a grand London production, there was a special feel to the show from start to finish.
Sheridan Smith is a sight to behold, she’s so expressive, and looks like she’s having a ball up there on the stage. She seemed genuinely taken aback at her standing ovation at the end, my only complaint was I wanted more! I’m probably gushing but all the things that come to mind are magnificent, incredible, breath-taking, I will watch Sheridan Smith again and again, she simply is a star. Funny Girl is showing in 22 cities across the UK, don’t miss it! I promise you truly won’t be disappointed.
