If you’re searching for a dining experience that’s both fun and unforgettable, Flesh & Buns in Oxford Circus is a fantastic choice. From the moment you walk in, the lively atmosphere pulls you in – think modern Japanese izakaya with a twist. The space is super versatile, perfect for anything from a casual dinner with friends to a special date night.
To start, we opted for the ‘Chips and Dip’ as an appetiser, a simple yet satisfying combination of crispy wonton chips served with flavourful avocado shiso and zingy tomato-salsa-esque dips. We then delved into the Korean Fried Chicken – a must-try of crispy, juicy chicken coated in a spicy gochujang sauce that delivers a hefty kick! But beware, you will need to wash those hands after as it’s quite a messy affair, if you really go for it! We rounded off our starters with the Spicy Tuna Maki (a personal favourite), featuring fresh tuna wrapped in sushi rice with a perfect balance of spice and creaminess, and the savoury and tender Scallop Yaki – divine!
For mains, the Olive Fed British Wagyu served with bao buns was a standout dish. The wagyu was tender and rich, which paired perfectly with the pillowy, steamy bao bun, completed with fresh veggies and silky sauce. Similarly, the Smoked Pork Ribs offered deep, smoky flavours, making it a hearty and satisfying choice. The Grilled Cucumber Salad provided a refreshing contrast too, with charred cucumber slices dressed in a tangy sauce.
To end our meal, our waiter recommended the Tokyo Toast, which turned out to be my favourite dish of the day – it was an absolute showstopper! The caramelised thick-cut brioche, soaked in cream and egg for 24 hours, was topped with smooth whisky ice cream and creamy custard, offering the perfect balance of sweetness and texture. While advertised as a sharing option (I promise I did share it with my husband !), I’ll be honest and say I’ll be keeping it all to myself next time!
The drinks accompanying our meal were also absolutely fantastic. We opted for a variety of cocktails – the Shoga Martini offered a ginger-infused kick, the lychee-based Lytini was refreshingly sweet, and the Yuzu Margarita, served frozen, delivered a citrusy, tangy finish. Delightful!
While the food and drinks were outstanding, the service was on another level, with staff who were super attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring that our evening went off without a hitch. A special shout out must be given to our waiter Abrar who couldn’t have been more helpful in advising drinks or dishes, he was an absolute gem!
