Supporting learning enrichment & reading development in schools
Celebrating non-fiction November
To celebrate all things factual during non-fiction November, Britannica Magazine, in partnership with the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, launches the first ever Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz Challenge.
Providing opportunities for children to read widely and often is part of the National Curriculum. In support of this, the Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz Challenge, like the magazine, aims to help school reading development and support teaching and learning enrichment in schools.
For many children reading non-fiction is the motivator. It engages them through their own interests, allows them to explore the world, stimulates their brain through inter-connected facts and sparks their natural curiosity across all sorts of subjects.
Sir Mark Grundy, CEO of Shireland Collegiate Academy in Birmingham, says: “In a world of fake news, vibrant, trustworthy reading material like Britannica Magazine, is key to engaging children, encouraging reluctant readers and developing those all-important critical thinking skills essential for increasing life chances and career prospects.”
In each monthly issue, readers can tackle the Big Britannica Quiz – a double page spread of multiple-choice brain teasers from right across the knowledge spectrum. Now the quiz is getting bigger, and better, with the launch of the Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz Challenge in real life!
The Schools Quiz Challenge is open to all primary, secondary and independent schools throughout the UK, for KS2 and KS3 pupils. There are two categories, 9 – 11 years old and 11 – 14 years old.
Taking part is simple. Schools can enter a 4-person team free of charge as long as they have signed up to the Britannica Magazines Schools Club – it costs nothing to sign up and includes a free annual subscription to Britannica Magazine. Registration closes on 31 October 2022.
The magazine is bursting with amazing stories about the real world around us, and quiz questions will be inspired by topics covered in the first six issues of Britannica Magazine.
Online heats will take place at the start of November – the top four schools in each category will go through to the live final, to be held on 30 November at the prestigious Bridewell Hall in London. Contestants, teachers, family and friends are all invited to attend. A primary and a secondary school will be crowned Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz Champion 2022.
The winning primary and secondary school will each receive £500 worth of non-fiction books for their school library.
Non-fiction author and Britannica Magazine CEO and Founder, Christopher Lloyd, says,“In today’s culture, we’re obsessed with quizzes, from the pub weekly to in depth psychometric profiling. One of the best facets of the quiz is that it appeals to all ages, and with each question a new level playing field is created and within an instant it could be you who gets the answer right!
“What better way to engage children in reading, learning and building up their confidence than a quiz? This Quiz Challenge enables children to recap, reinforce and test their knowledge on what they’ve read in Britannica Magazine, making learning fun and dynamic”.
More than 800 schools have already signed up as members of the Britannica Magazine School Club, using non-fiction to teach literacy, with many running breakfast, lunch or after school reading clubs, and pairing up reading buddies for those struggling with reading.
