Fiona Cairns Easter Cake and Biscuit Collection 2020 Review

Reviewed by Louisa Nashir

Fiona Cairns first opened their doors over 30 years ago and over the decades have gone on to produce beautifully decorated, luxurious cakes and biscuits which are fit for royalty. The high-end bakery is well known in the foodie world and through hard work and determination has gone on to become a brand that’s renowned for its luxury cakes and biscuits.

I was thrilled when the team at Fiona Cairns sent me a packaged containing some of their Easter 2020 collection. I was excited to see what this year’s goodies would be and how they would look and taste.

The package arrived by courier and the contents arrived intact and perfectly presented.

The items I received were…

  • 1 x 6 Inch Easter Egg Chocolate Sponge Cake
  • 1 x Simnel Cake
  • 6 x Iced Gingerbread Rabbit Biscuits

My first impression was how beautifully each item was decorated and packaged. A lot of thought and care has gone into each item and it’s clear to see why Fiona Cairns is such a popular choice in the bakery market.

My family and I enjoyed sampling each item over the weekend and below is a review on each item.

Iced Gingerbread Biscuits – Rabbits

I am a huge fan of gingerbread, so these beautiful, dainty rabbit biscuits appealed to me. The decoration is sublime and they are very appealing to all ages.

Each biscuit was individually wrapped in a clear cellophane back and tied with a golden ribbon. The Fiona Cairns tag was a nice finishing touch.

Each biscuit was decorated to a high standard and finished with a non-edible yellow gingham bow and a mini chocolate egg for the rabbit’s tail. The white icing used on the biscuit was textured which gave it such a unique look. They are almost too pretty to eat but needs must!

The biscuit was nice and fresh with a good snap and the gingerbread itself was the perfect flavour. Other brands I have tried in the past have been either very strong in flavour or very weak yet the team at Fiona Cairns has hit the jackpot with the perfect balance of spices and warmth. The warmth of the gingerbread sliced through the sweetness of the icing and the biscuit is a real treat!

I can see these becoming extremely popular this Easter!

Easter Egg Chocolate Sponge Cake

The cake arrived safely packaged in a white box with the Fiona Cairns logo printed in gold on the front. The box was heavy duty and the cake was very well protected. It travelled from Leicestershire to Manchester via courier and arrived perfectly intact.

The cake itself was a real vision of Easter beauty. A pale yellow icing adorned with glimmery fondant and chocolate Easter eggs and feathers. The cake was truly stunning to the eyes.

Once removed from the box we took off the lilac and gold decoration ribbon and set about slicing it.

The cake cut extremely well and kept its shape once sliced. We were able to cut 12 good sized slices from the 6-inch cake.

The cake itself was moist and fudgy which we all loved! The cake wasn’t massively sweet which was perfect as the icing gave it the sweetness. The buttercream was out of this world, really light and fluffy and utterly delicious.

Some chocolate cakes can be very sickly and stodgy, but this wasn’t. It was beautifully light and had the perfect balance of flavours. The cake to icing ratio was also perfect.

This cake is a real winner for us and we enjoyed it immensely.

Simnel Cake

This was the cake I most looked forward to trying as I adore marzipan! Unfortunately, being the only marzipan lover in the house means it’s rarely bought.

Simnel Cake is a huge part of Easter, but many don’t know the meaning behind it.

Simnel cake has been eaten since medieval times as both a rich, sweet treat and a symbolic ritual. The fruit cake is topped with eleven marzipan balls to represent the eleven apostles of Christ, minus Judas.

The simnel cake I received from Fiona Cairns came in its own pale pink and cream tin which was adorned with the Fiona Cairns logo and on the sides of the tin the words Easter Simnel Cake were printed alongside some rather cute Eater Bunny motifs.

I love the fact that the cake came with its very own tin as it’s not a cake that you eat a lot of at one time, so the tin is great for keeping it fresh.

The Simnel cake was beautifully decorated with 11 marzipan flowers to represent Jesus’ apostles. I liked the flowers as usually on a simnel cake its usually marzipan balls. The flowers were a nice elegant touch to a well-known and respected cake.

The cake itself cut very well and had a good amount of fruit and marzipan throughout. Each bite had a good generous mix of the two.

I must say I am quite pleased that I am the only one who likes this cake in my house as it means I don’t have to share it.

If you are looking for some luxurious, tasty and beautifully decorated cakes and biscuits this Easter then look no further. Fiona Cairns deserves every bit of recognition as the cakes and biscuits are fabulous!
