‘Everybody’s Talking about Jamie’…. and rightly so! The hit musical concludes its sensational second UK tour at Leicester’s Curve Theatre.
Inspired by the story of Jamie Campbell and his mother, Margaret. When Jamie was 15 he wrote to a TV documentary company asking them to make a programme about him. He wanted to wear a dress to his end-of-year prom. He didn’t know what reaction he would get, from his peers or even the school and teachers, but he wanted to be his true self.
The documentary aired on BBC Three in 2011, telling his story and how he found the courage to do it. Inspired by Jamie’s story, but set in Sheffield, the musical opened in 2017 and quickly transferred to the West End for an award-filled three years.

Following Jamie, and interwoven journeys, we witness the build-up to the school prom and the challenges he, his family and friends are faced with. We also discover that it is the unwavering support of his nearest and dearest that give him the bravery and loving support to carry out his first steps towards an ambitious drag queen act.
Right out of the gate, the opening act sets the musical standard with pop-infused energy that pulsates throughout the entire performance. The vibrant and poignant score, crafted by Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae, provides a perfect backdrop for Jamie’s story. The songs range from upbeat anthems like “And You Don’t Even Know It” to touching ballads such as “He’s My Boy,” showcasing a versatile and emotionally resonant musical landscape. Each number not only entertains but also advances the narrative, adding depth to the characters’ journeys.
The cast’s performance is nothing short of spectacular. Ivano Turco – as the titular star – brings a magnetic presence to the stage. His portrayal of Jamie’s blend of vulnerability and determination is both inspiring and deeply moving. Rebecca McKinnis, playing Margaret, Jamie’s supportive mother, delivers a heartfelt performance that anchors the emotional core of the story. Kevin Clifton, as Hugo and drag-star Loco Chanelle, was clearly a draw for several of the audience and he certainly shone as an inspirational mentor of Jam. With no small parts, nor shortage of stage and screen stars, the chemistry between the core cast and ensemble is palpable, particularly in scenes that emphasise the power of friendship and community. All characters were fully imagined and at no point did the show rely on tropes or cliches which lessened the overcoming-adversity narrative.
The seamless set transitions and dynamic choreography further elevate the production, creating an immersive experience for the audience. The set design effectively captures the contrasting worlds of Jamie’s school life and his aspirations, while the costumes, especially the drag outfits, are dazzling and intricately designed. Clever lighting and sound design also play crucial roles in enhancing the overall atmosphere. The fantastic orchestra is on stage throughout; glanced through the top floor of the modernist structure (the mid-century modern style will be instantly recognisable to anyone who attended school from the 1960s).
Don’t miss out on this Summer’s hottest gossip – ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ is an uplifting coming-of-age tale for the modern day. Full of life, love and laughter this wonderful musical is guaranteed to leave you beaming and believing dreams can come true. It resonates on multiple levels, celebrating individuality, resilience, and the courage to embrace one’s true self. Book your tickets now and dress to the nines, for the very best of British theatre!

The modern Curve Theatre stands within a clean, well-lit, and popular cultural quarter of the city. The purpose-built venue is perfectly suited for all production types and quite unique; with no typical backstage area, you may find cast and crew mingling with you! The Theatre is surrounded by a range of bars, restaurants, and entertainment options for a great night out in the bustling city. Arriving by car, routes to the theatre were well signposted and nearby parking was plentiful. Other transport links are nearby. The Highcross and Haymarket shopping centres are a short walk away.
The single-level main foyer is relaxed and spacious, leading to all accessible levels. We were greeted warmly on entering and felt a buzz in the air. We found the bars/concession stands to be well manned, stocked with a wide range of hot/cold drinks and treats, all standard prices for theatres. Both stall and circle seats are very comfortable and provide excellent views of the stage.
