After watching the film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, my 18 year old daughter and I were both desperate to see this show. Well it certainly didn’t disappoint. One word, phenomenal!
It’s always a pleasure reviewing shows at Milton Keynes Theatre, it’s a lovely place situated in the Theatre District. Parking is right outside opposite the theatre, which is really handy. There are several bars and restaurants surrounding the theatre, these are always busy and buzzing. The atmosphere in the theatre is nice and relaxed. The staff are friendly and always happy to help. Everywhere is clean and tidy. We really enjoy going there. Once we were shown to our seats, the theatre was starting to fill up very quick. Our seats were comfortable and our view was great! We were very excited for what was to come.
The first thing we noticed was an interpreter for the hard of hearing! We both thought this was amazing that the show is accessible for everyone. The story of Jamie is based on a true story of a 16 year old school boy living in England.
Layton Williams, who plays Jamie, was amazing. His singing and dancing was absolutely mind blowing, we could not take our eyes off of him throughout the whole show.
The cast was quite small but really great and very professional. There’s only 20 people in it, and they all added so much with their individual characters to put on a great show. You couldn’t fault them.
The famous Shane Richie delivered the role of Hugo/Loco Chanelle brilliantly. His character was very inspirational to Jamie, and I’m sure a lot of people watching too.
Jamie’s Mum, Margaret, was played by Amy Ellen Richardson. Her voice was absolutely outstanding, and left the audience moved, and some emotional.
And what a surprise it was to see George Sampson in the cast! My daughter was delighted, as she grew up watching him in various films and shows. He played his character very well.
There was a live band playing the soundtrack throughout the show. They were hidden for most of the show but their talent truly shined through!
Without giving too much of the story away Jamie has not had it easy growing up in Sheffield. He has been a victim of bullying and prejudice in and out of school, including his own dad. But throughout the show he was given the support of his lovely Mum, inspiring drag queens and friends, especially his best friend Pritti Pashe, played brilliantly by Sharan Phull. He overcame the awful comments to step out of the darkness and become the drag Queen he was meant to be.
The show is so uplifting and very funny. There was so much energy on stage. We cried a little and laughed a lot. We thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a fabulous heartwarming show.
We are regular theatre goers and have got to say this is one the best shows we have ever seen.
By the end everyone was up on their feet, and the cast got a well deserved standing ovation, it was simply wonderful.
After watching the show, we were very keen to download and listen to the soundtrack!
Milton Keynes you will not be disappointed. We LOVED it!
