I was delighted to receive the Emporia Smart.5 phone.  It came robustly boxed in their branded red and white box ensuring it arrived safely.  The packaging was smart and functional.

Contained within the box in addition to the phone itself, was the installation manual, a training manual, headphones, charging cable, plug, charging station but best of all, it comes with a case!  There really is nothing worse than getting a new phone then having to wait for a case to arrive!  With kids and being outdoors a lot, I really can’t risk using a phone without a case!

So, onto the technical details of the phone- it is an android phone with an octa-core 1.8 Ghz processor, the screen is 5.5 inches in size and it has a 3550mAh battery.  The phone needs a nano sim and has a slot for a memory card to increase the storage from the internal 32gb.  It is IP54 rated which means it is splash and dust proof.  The phone is setup with a triple camera with a flash as well as NFC technology to allow for contactless payment.

The phone arrived with some charge so I could get started straight away.  The set up was simple but the back up of having the installation manual was comforting.  The home screen is straight forwards and it is easy to find everything.  The training book is then there when you have time to look at the phone’s functions in more detail.

The phone cover protects both front and back of the phone and it has 4 buttons on the front to allow you to make calls and use the camera and torch without opening the cover.  It is put on by removing the phones own battery cover and clipping the case on in its place.  Once the case is on, the setup of the phone automatically adjusts to use the 4 buttons on the front but when you open the case, it reverts back to the normal screen format- rather clever!  My only slight concern would be that the battery cover feels a bit flimsy and I would worry that could get damaged if you were swapping the case on and off too often.

I’ve used the phone in place of my normal one and if I’m honest, it is actually easier to use!  Having the cover with the quick link saves me having to stop and clean/ dry my hands to make or answer calls.  The photos I’ve taken have good sharpness and clarity, the internet is good and the battery life excellent.  The charging cradle it a nice extra, and is easier than attaching a cable.

The Emporia Smart.5 is clearly aiming for the older market with its simplified and easy to see layout but as it has all the functions other smart phones contain, it really would tick the box for anyone looking for a robust, intuitive and functional phone.  Priced at £249.99 it is competitively priced and good value.
