Deadly Diaries by Steve Backshall Review

Reviewed by Louise Best

Steve Backshall’s ‘Deadly Diaries’ is an easy and interesting read; full of fascinating statistics and intriguing details this book makes for a very honest and open approach to the animal kingdom as experienced by Steve Backshall and his team. In his own words he says, ‘To me the truth about the natural world is everything’.

I found this book refreshing and real. My stepdaughter who adores animals had lots of questions about the different animals in this book; particularly the cheetah which Steve encountered in South Africa. Whilst this book generated more curiosity from my stepdaughter about the animal world – it opened up my eyes too with just how many different ones there are. Sometimes we take these things for granted or never even think about these fascinating animals we share this world with.

My personal favourite was the Secretary Bird which Steve and his team visited at a Bird Sanctuary in South Africa; it looks a little like an eagle with long thin legs!

Overall I thought this book was a good introduction to the wider animal kingdom for children. It is full of unique details on each animal encountered. I highly recommend this book, a good read and an excellent educational tool too.

The book retails at £7.99 which I feel is a good price considering how educational it is. I feel that this is a book that can be returned to again and again.
