We enjoyed the most amazing opportunity to camp at Cofton Holidays, a five-star holiday park in Devon, near Dawlish Warren. On arrival, we were greeted in reception with a warm welcome, even though the great British summer had provided a downpour. But not to be discouraged, we were escorted to our pitch by the camp ranger, who said we could take our pick from the various camping sites, we were happy to accept his recommendation, of a flat, spacious, grass pitch with an electric hook-up, in the Camping Orchard Field.
We were close to all the necessary amenities, toilet and shower block, with washing up facilities and a water tap, there was even a laundrette should we need it.
We parked up, but decided as the weather was against us, we would venture over to the entertainment complex. Which was a short walk, the grounds are beautifully kept by a small army of gardeners, the flower beds are bursting with colour and the hedgerows and trees provide the greenery, with the Devonshire countryside beyond.
We passed a fish and chip hut, which I presume is open at peak times, and behind reception is the site shop, which stocks everything you need at reasonable prices. There is a traditional, dog friendly pub, with outdoor bench seating. Opposite is the outdoor pool area, which again is beautifully landscaped and includes a smaller children’s paddling pool and fun water play area with water spurts, showers and fountains, brilliant for the kiddies. This area is safely fenced and has lifeguards, and places for parents to sit to supervise their children. The lawned verges surrounding the pool provide lots of space to sunbathe, as we enjoyed later in the week.
I was also surprised to see a couple of sheep, horses and donkeys in a field overlooking the pool area, beyond this is the high ropes course, which can be enjoyed at an extra charge. There is also a woodland play area, which is free to use, which includes a zipwire. There are several playgrounds dotted around the site near to the various accommodation options: camping and caravan pitches, static caravans and lodges. There are also four fishing lakes, which are nice to explore and a dog walking field.
The entertainment complex has the main stage/bar area, (which also incorporates the Carvery on a Sunday) and a games room on the ground floor. Up the stairs or via the lift is Amelia’s restaurant and bar, we enjoyed a coffee, while we waited for the rain to subside. Also on this level is the indoor pool and spa.
We were then duped into thinking there was a break in the weather, as we returned to pitch our tent, well the heavens really opened, but we just cracked on with it and in no time, we were all set with the kettle on. I popped over to the showers, which are modern and clean with plenty of hot water and lovely big mirrors. The toilets are next door, with individual sink cubicles, which are great for privacy when teeth cleaning.
When I returned the sun was shining and the skies were blue, and fortunately remained so for the rest of our stay.
We spent a day in Teignmouth, another at the beach in Dawlish Warren and a visit to Dawlish, which had a traditional high street, with a butcher and a baker that provided everything we needed for our BBQ that evening.
We loved the entertainment in the clubhouse. They have a great entertainments team; all the staff are friendly and helpful. We had a lovely meal at Amelia’s followed by a jug of Pimm’s and our desserts on the terrace overlooking the pool which is beautifully lit up at night.
We indulged in a session in the pool, which is an extra charge and recommended it is booked in advance, via the App. There is a dip and dine offer which is good value if you were already intending going out for lunch. The pool has jacuzzi jet loungers, and a sauna and steam room too. The showers and changing rooms are all very clean.
I haven’t camped for a few years now, but this break has really reminded me of what I enjoyed about camping, yes, the weather can be unpredictable, but it is so relaxing, being close to nature, watching the birds in the sky and not having to rush anywhere.
I would thoroughly recommend Cofton Holidays, there is plenty to do, but it’s the perfect place to unwind and spend time with those you love.
