I was born in the early 70’s so my partying years involved 80’s music. I knew all of the decade’s songs making it into the Club Tropicana musical. Michael Gynell’s Club Tropicana has two significant cast members – X Factor and Joseph star Joe McElderry and ex-Sugababe Amelle Berrabah.
The musical is set within a declining Spanish holiday resort. Where resort staff are attempting to impress for a hotel inspection, in order to be in with a chance of winning Best Hotel of the Year. The main aim is to beat their rival resort. The musical kicks off with a wedding scene where Lorraine ditches finance Olly at the aisle. They both jet off of holiday with their individual group of friends only to find themselves holidaying at the same resort – hilarious. The cast gave their all throughout the entire performance, it was definitely a hit everyone was up and in full participation – a great fun night. Took me back to my younger years!!!
The musical as expected was jam packed with the catchy electrifying songs. The choreography by Nick Winston’s was very energetic, sexy and nonstop. Within the musical you even see Aha’s -“Take on Me” transformed into a romantic duet. “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” well this was definitely a high point and brought out many belly laughs from the audience. And becomes a vehicle for drunken flirtation. There was a list of cocktail names, such as a “Screaming Orgasm”. Sweaty Spanish housekeeper Consuela, Kate Robbins impersonates several popular 80s icons, from Jim Bowen, Dolly Parton and Cilla Black to Tina Turner and Margaret Thatcher.
Watch out for I/we have signs – this was simply but fantastic!
