The Grove Theatre in Dunstable is a modern theatre. There is a car park literally a few moments’ walk away, and the disabled car park is even nearer. The great thing is that after 6pm parking is free. The staff are very helpful and the facilities are spotless and there are plenty of loos.
I was lucky enough to be asked to review this show and took my best friend along with me. We were slightly dubious as at 40 & 41 we were the youngest people there! We needn’t have worried. We had fantastic seats 3 seats from the front so could see everything.
I am a fan of the Rat Pack and know all their songs, however my friend doesn’t but loves live music. The set takes you to Las Vegas and a hotel called Sands. There was a fantastic Christmas tree which gave the whole thing a very festive feel. The show starts with the Big Band and the piano and the sound was amazing. Then on comes Frank Sinatra who has the most amazing voice and sounds just like him complete with his mannerisms.
Frank then introduces Sammy Davis Junior, who again had the classic ‘Sammy’ moves and expressions down to a tee. His rendition of Mr Bojangles reduced me to tears it was so moving! Again his voice was out of this world.
On to the stage comes Dean Martin (my particular favourite) who we were amazed to see smoking a real cigarette (which all added to the atmosphere of a hotel bar). He also played his part brilliantly as we all know he was a bit of ‘a drinker’ and a ladies man. I thought he was quite a charmer.
The guys are joined on stage by the Borelli Sisters who are all brilliant singers and very sexy in a tasteful ‘burlesque’ way. One of my favourite songs although not traditional ‘Rat Pack’ was their version of Baby Its Cold Outside.
The 1st half of the show ends with a fantastic version of New York New York and I have to say it blew me away.
I was a little concerned that my friend would be bored but she assured me in the interval that despite not knowing all the tunes she absolutely loved it! We couldn’t wait for the second half.
The 2nd half of the show continued in a similar style, however there was more of the famous trio’s interaction with each other. Some fantastic jokes and they all seemed a little worse for wear which was all part of the act. Some more fab traditional songs and some Xmas favourites.
All too soon it came to an end with a very moving and lovely version of ‘Have yourself a merry little Christmas’, complete with snow coming down on the stage.
All in all a fantastic performance which we both thoroughly enjoyed. The cast were all brilliant and had the most amazing voices. I am already hoping to be able to book for next Christmas and will be taking my Dad along for the show.
To summarise if you are a Rat Pack fan you will love this, they did all the classics like I got you under my skin, Mack the Knife, The Lady is a Tramp etc… But they also did some fantastic Xmas songs as well.
Massive 5 out of 5 and can’t wait to see it again.
