Standing the test of time, the fabulous and hilarious musical Chicago is now on tour and currently showing at the New Theatre, Oxford. The award-winning musical originally opened on Broadway in 1976. Telling the famous story of two female criminals with a thirst for fame and fortune, Chicago the musical is based on the play written by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about the crimes she actually reported on at the time.

The New Theatre Oxford is the perfect venue for an evening of great entertainment. The theatre is situated in the centre of the historic city, with parking close by as well as excellent public transport services. Visiting on one of the warmest evenings of the year, the air-conditioned Piano Bar was the perfect place for us to enjoy a pre-show drink. The theatre has an expansive auditorium, we found the seats to be most comfortable, with lots of leg room and the theatre is very access friendly.

With minimalism, Chicago packs a powerful punch from start to finish. The simpleness of the set and monochrome costume design cleverly serves to showcase the amazing performances and choreography. The clever lighting also adds to the focus and overall effect of a dimly lit jazz night club.

Uniquely, the wonderful orchestra have tiered seating on the stage and become very much characters in the show, just like in a 1920’s jazz club. With a show stopping score, at times they steal the show – their showcase number being one favourite moment as well as when they play the audience out of the auditorium all the way to the very end.

Speaking of stealing the show, the choreography is stunning throughout, with sensual, light and crisp movements, dazzling still images and plenty of high kicks all round, the dancing is a treat for the eyes from start to finish.

Set in Chicago in the decadent 1920s age of ‘All that Jazz’, the musical follows the story of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, both facing trial for murder. To evade justice and with a craving for celebrity and attention, the pair hire the services of slick Chicago lawyer, Mr Billy Flynn. With sensual appeal and themes of celebrity, media and fame, it is a story as relevant now as ever.

The talented cast are all incredibly hard working and really do give it their all, making the most of every moment.

Faye Brooks (Roxie Hart) and Djalenga Scott (Velma Kelly) are a sensational perfectly cast pairing. With outstanding, note perfect vocals and superb stage presence, they delight the audience, nailing the not easy task of moving between sensuality, slapstick comedy and hysteria to reflect the unbalanced nature of the characters with ease.

Lee Mead is charismatic and commands the stage as the immoral, manipulative lawyer Billy Flynn. His note perfect, powerful vocals are perfect for the part.

Full of razzle-dazzle, boldness and glitz – what more could you wish for! A brilliant night out – get yourself along to see Chicago and enjoy all that jazz!
