Well if you are looking for a good old knees up, Chas and Dave is certainly the show for you. I took along my mum and husband to The Grove Theatre in Dunstable to see the cockney duo in action.
The theatre was busy with a mixed age range of people. The staff were friendly as we collected our tickets and were shown to our seats. Our seats were comfortable and we had a great view. Chas and Dave came on stage at around 7.30pm. The stage looked like a set from an old east end pub with Chas’s famous ageing Joanna (piano) being the main focal point. The first half of the set were songs from when they first started out playing in pubs and working men’s clubs around London in the early 70’s, which included old cockney favourite hits ‘Gercha’ and ‘London Girls’. The fun lyrics and infectious charm had everybody clapping and up on their feet dancing in the aisles.
There was an interval which lasted about 20 minutes. The bar was busy but everyone was being served as quick as possible. There was a stall situated in the foyer with Chas and Dave merchandise being sold, which included t-shirts and CD’s.
The 2nd half was just as good if not better than the first, as they played more of the old favourites including ‘Rabbit’, ‘Snooker Loopy’, ‘The Sideboard song’, ‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’ and a few new tracks from their latest album, That’s What Happens. Chas and Dave interacted really well with the audience, the atmosphere and energy was great!
The young drummer, Nik (Chas’s son), did a brilliant job filling in for the late Mick Burt. It was a really fab show. It finished just after 9.30pm. Watching Chas and Dave live brought back lots of great childhood memories, and made me appreciate what talented musicians and song writers they are. It’s no surprise they have been around for over 40 years! I would definitely recommend going to watch them, we had a really good time.
