Essence of Ireland Grove Theatre Review
Essence of Ireland
Grove Theatre, Dunstable

On Sunday 13 October we were treated to a whirl of Irish dancing, beautiful singing, audience participation in traditional songs and the delights of live music on guitar, violin and drums. Essence of Ireland had arrived at the Grove Theatre in Dunstable as part of its UK tour.
The story began just after the Second World War when jobs were scarce and emigration rife. The sad reality where people were separated by the pull of a better job prospects in faraway places and the unfulfilled promises of being together once more. Narrator Ged Graham soon whipped up the audience into a frenzy of clapping and encouraged us to sing along to old favourites.
Wonderful dancing, which to my untrained eye was performed with impeccable timing, amazed and delighted the filled auditorium. The dancers led by Richard Hancock and Samantha Fisher seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. The captivating fiddle playing by Leanne Thorose was heard so clearly over the excellent sound system. The images projected with such clarity onto the screen complemented the simple but effective scenery and lighting effects. In row D we had a perfect view; however the acoustics and layout of the auditorium allow you to fully immerse yourself in the show no matter where you are.
From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed. The box office staff and bar staff were friendly and polite and the person on the door was very helpful with his directions to our seats. During the interval we availed ourselves once more of the bar facilities and considered partaking in an ice cream which were available in the foyer. The bar offered a good variety of alcoholic, soft and hot beverages; all of which could be taken back into the auditorium albeit in plastic/paper cups. There was a bit of a queue for the ladies; unfortunately exacerbated by cisterns which would benefit from some improvements. The theatre auditorium was comfortable both in terms of seating and temperature.
After a standing ovation and a second encore the curtains finally closed on another thoroughly enjoyable evening at The Grove theatre in Dunstable.
