I was delighted to be asked along to Browns to review a special Royal Afternoon Tea in honour of the Queen’s 90th Birthday this month. It also happened to fall near Father’s Day so I decided to take my husband along with me who was to be fair a little unsure about having an afternoon tea, in his words “Isn’t that for old ladies?”

We soon found out it wasn’t just found older ladies. The Royal Afternoon Tea arrived on a lovely sliver stand which I thought was a nice idea as I have had afternoon tea before and it can come on stands that would seem more suited to females but this one I think would appeal to everyone. We noticed a few groups of students sharing one on a table nearby.

Our waiter was wonderful and brought us our cocktails which were made of Black Cow Vodka and tasted amazing. We decided to have our tea and coffee once we had finished the food. We were both impressed with the food that was served and I loved the little brioche rolls which is a change from just bread. The Coronation chicken was my favourite and I loved the name of it, very fitting. The scones were still warm which was a good touch and I love clotted cream so I was very happy with that, I did find it a little odd there was no butter, I know there was clotted cream but normally with afternoon tea I have been offered both. Also we were only given five rolls and not six which wasn’t a huge deal, when I asked the waiter he told me he didn’t count the rolls which was honest but I felt wasn’t really an excuse.

My husband adored the chocolate brownies and was very pleased I had decided to bring him along as a Father’s Day treat. I enjoyed the salted caramel profiteroles which were a nice change for me as I do not eat chocolate and I do tend to find this limits my dessert choices.

This special event is happening throughout June so really there is no excuse not to try it and at £17.95 per person it is well worth the price. We were both shocked at how full we felt after as we didn’t expect to be given the sizing. So why not treat yourself or even as I did use the Royal Afternoon Tea as a Father’s Day gift and a shameful excuse to be able to eat some wonderful food!
