The Bluebrick Wolverhampton Review

On a freezing, snowy Tuesday night in January, the warm glow coming from The Bluebrick in the Canalside Quarter of Wolverhampton, was more than just a little inviting! Picking our way carefully across the frozen car park, my husband and I were surprised at how busy it looked on a night when most folks were sensibly tucked up at home! Our table was reserved, however no specific table seemed to have been assigned as a staff member asked if we would like to choose our own or be shown to a table. Not having been there before, I asked her to show us to one and she offered us a lovely spot next to a roaring fire (ok so it was a gas mock up but work with me!)
Looking around, we noticed that there was a diverse mix of clientele. Being next to a Premier Inn there were several lone business travellers as well as local diners from all walks of life, university students, a group of theatre goers, a family with small children and a retired couple enjoying a quiet fish supper.
The bright and bubbly Tolly introduced herself to us as our "server" for the evening and took our drinks order. Upon her swift return she wasted no time in telling us what the soup of the day was and that the Country vegetable pie from the Sunday dining menu was also available as a mains option.
The Table Table menu is extensive and has something to please all tastes with choices from the Grill, Gourmet burgers and traditional favourites like steak and ale pie, beer battered fish and some with a twist – chicken and chips with a lemon and thyme or Piri Piri glaze. After pondering which of the many delicious starters to choose from, we opted for the sharing platter which contained 5 of the starter options plus onion rings and wedges and we were not disappointed! A large rectangular plate with ample quantities of each item and 2 dips of our choice disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived! The Calamari was delicious and I highly recommend it to seafood lovers!
Our plates were cleared away within a few minutes of us finishing and our main meals arrived quickly afterwards.
My husband’s choice of a Chorizo burger arrived on a wooden board with a side of chips and burger relish, looking like a feature on man versus food. The description "chorizo" burger is slightly deceptive as this is a very delicious fresh burger with a small slither of chorizo on top inside a fabulous looking bun with an onion marmalade which, according to my husband, was the star of the show! If he was disappointed by the amount of chorizo it didn't last long and he happily polished off the ample portion! My grilled rump of lamb was rare, as requested and was served with new potatoes and seasonal veg, on this occasion this was cabbage and leeks which were not so much al dente as slightly undercooked but nevertheless delicious! The red wine and redcurrant sauce was lovely, a little more of it would have been nice but then that could be down to my personal taste.
The dessert menu consists of specialist sundaes and classic winter puddings and we were tempted by the option to share 3 desserts as a platter but instead went for a chocolate fudge sensation cake with Jersey cow ice cream and a bread and butter pudding which Tolly recommended. Within a few minutes of ordering the manager Kate came over to apologise personally, explaining that the last portion of bread and butter pudding had just gone! I said I was disappointed but chose the Lemon Drizzle sponge pudding with custard to replace it. Our server came back with our second round of drinks and couldn't apologise enough as it was her who had recommended it – her apology was not necessary! My replacement was amazing! A deliciously light sponge, steeped in a bitter sweet lemon sauce with a delightful sugary crunch – well done Table Table, it tasted homemade!!! The chocolate fudge cake was a generous portion and I am told it was lovely but the ice cream was the one to write home about, truely creamy! My husband enjoyed a double espresso to round off his meal from their "Costa" selection while we filled in the loyalty cards for a new scheme allowing you to collect stamps for each main meal purchased and "earn" free starters, mains and desserts with every visit – definitely worth signing up for if you regularly dine out.
On this occasion we dined as a couple but I made a point of looking over the children’s menu. It holds a lovely selection of kid’s favourites for £3.99 including 2 side orders and the Sunday Roast is the same price. For older children there are the £4.99 options of classic pub mains like lasagne, scampi or even a steak. It is also worth noting that lunchtime and earlybird diners can choose main meals from just £4.99 on weekdays – definitely great value for money!
The Bluebrick has impressed us with its food, friendly service and ambience and we shall definitely be making a return visit as a family, after all I still have to try that Bread and Butter Pudding!
