Ask any preschool age child and they’ll tell you Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom is the best thing since sliced bread. So, finding out Ben, Holly, Nanny Plum, Gaston, The Wise Old Elf and all of their friends would be appearing live on stage was a dream come true for my 4 year old!
The whole show was very cleverly done, with fun songs, audience interaction and a story that kept moving without letting the children every get bored. The characters (adult actors in full costume including huge cartoon heads) played hide and seek, cleaned Gaston’s cave, took on the job of the tooth fairy and even shrunk their human friend Lucy for a trip to the Little Kingdom. My daughter particularly enjoyed the sea of jelly, which is a huge part of the TV show and didn’t disappoint on stage.
The show ended with a medley of all of the songs, with dancing in the aisles encouraged, although the ending itself was rather sudden, we were a little surprised there was no curtain call. My daughter had a wonderful time, she was asking to come back the next day as soon as the show ended.
There is all of the usual merchandise; spinning flashing toys, t-shirts, balloons, etc. but prices were reasonable so the children all seemed very happy. The Kings Theatre’s new service where interval ice creams, drinks, etc. can be pre-ordered via an app (menus are on the seat backs) is wonderful, we tried it out and sure enough, our ice creams were delivered straight to our seats when the interval started, for no extra charge. I’d highly recommend this, particularly when visiting the theatre with children. It’s fantastic to see a historic venue so keen to move with the times.
All in all, it was a fabulous experience and a perfect first theatre experience for any young family.
