As someone who is always on the look out for new and environmentally friendly beauty products, I was super pleased to have been given the opportunity to try out Aviela’s Pure Shea Body Butter.
Both my son and I really struggle with dry skin, we have a condition called Keratosis pilaris, this is where the hair follicles become blocked with a build up of keratin. Nobody knows exactly why keratin builds up, but the condition is thought to run in families, which in my case, would appear to be true. Over the years I have tried many different E45 creams and moisturisers and nothing has helped, however, over time the problem has become less invasive and less noticeable. Moreover, all the lotions and potions I have used also hasn’t made any difference to my son’s arms.
During the winter my cheeks and T zone can become particularly dry and flaky and general moisturisers and lotions don’t seem to touch the problem without creating a build up of layers of lotion that quickly turn in to flakes themselves, It’s really quite disgusting to be honest.
Anyway, having all that in mind I thought to myself that this couldn’t be any worse but I was sceptical of the Aviela products. Boy, was I glad I tried this stuff.
The packaging is lovely there’s only a plastic lid and the jar itself is glass, surrounded in a cardboard box that fits snugly around the jar there is no wastage in the packaging and no unnecessary excess that cannot be recycled! I am always on the hunt for sustainable, eco-friendly, vegan friendly and cruelty free products to add to my list of go to items for beauty and wellbeing. Well you can’t get less complicated than a product with only 2 ingredients!
Now whilst this product has the leaping bunny and has the vegan society logo and approval, I would like some more information on the sustainability of the ingredients and where they come from, there doesn’t appear to be much information on the website about the ingredients and how they are farmed and how that impacts on the surrounding environment.
Once I opened the jar I was expecting a whiff of overpowering aroma that filled my room, but was met with a simple and not totally unpleasant scent, I can’t decide if I would describe it as “nice” but it certainly wasn’t awful. The cream inside was thick and whipped within an inch of its life, clearly filled with lots of air making it a wonderfully fluffy texture, you know the kind you just want to keep poking! I am an incredibly sensory person and textures make a HUGE difference to me. Touching this stuff is addictive I must say!
Once I had washed, exfoliated, and toned my face I scooped a pea-sized amount into my hand and watched as it melted in my palm. It clearly is incredibly crude and unrefined and went on to my face like butter! It did leave a greasy oily sheen and feel to both my palms and my face and I wouldn’t recommend wearing under makeup or even putting it on in the day to be honest, I feel like this is certainly an evening sleeping product which will allow it to soak into the skin fully for you to benefit entirely from its magic.
It took a little while for my skin to absorb it despite the website saying it is fast absorbing, it is, however very important to note all skin types are different and have different absorption rates. I have been using it twice a day now for 3 days and my goodness me the difference in the skin on my cheeks and T zone is simply on another level!
I was concerned that with the oily nature of the cream that it would block my facial pores and I would end up with breakouts around my chin and forehead, but as it stands that hasn’t happened and I should imagine as long as I keep washing my face every night and morning it will continue to keep excess oils out of my pores and allow this incredible product to do its job! I don’t use it twice on my chin I tend to focus on the dry areas rather than high breakout areas, just in case.
As mentioned earlier my son and I struggle with Keratosis Pilaris and even after using this product once a day for 3 days there is a significant difference in my son’s arms. They are much smoother and look much less angry.
This company is an award-winning company and honestly this unrefined Pure Shea Butter is well worth the money. In short, I am VERY, VERY impressed which takes a lot these days.
