A tongue-in-cheek, satirical comedy, this tour of Avenue Q should not be missed!

From the sunny disposition of the poster – smiling adults and furry muppet-esq puppets – you could easily be fooled into thinking that Avenue Q was aimed at children, but as the caution advises, this show is definitely “not for little monsters”!

Full of colourful characters, laughs and catchy show-tunes, the show, if you aren’t aware, is acted out by brightly coloured puppets, manned by real life actors, reminiscent of Sesame Street, but much more un-PC.

The story follows Princeton (manned by the wonderful Richard Lowe), a recent college graduate, who while trying to find an apartment in New York, finds himself looking for a place on Avenue Q (he couldn’t afford Avenue A through P). There he meets the rest of the cast (and child-star-turned-superintendent Gary Coleman!), and decides to call Avenue Q home while he, and the rest of the cast, find their ‘purpose’ in life and all the trials and tribulations that follow adulthood once you realise even though as a child you are taught to believe that you are ‘special’, that in fact, the real world is much more tough, including job hunting, falling in and out of love and finding your true ‘purpose’.

The musical numbers in the show were witty and wonderful – with tongue-in-cheek titles including “If You Were Gay”, “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist” and “The Internet is for Porn”, they are not for the feint-hearted, however they are very, very catchy!

The actors skilfully brought the puppets to life, especially the two-some that were ‘Nicky’ (2 people controlling one puppet can’t be easy!!), and the characters all felt very believable. Their comic timing was second to none, and the facial expressions and actions of the actors mirrored by the puppets were absolutely brilliant! I have to also say a big shout out to the actors who made their momentary appearance in the audience with the Bad Idea Bears during ‘The Money Song’ who were also obviously working hard behind the scenes.

Taking place in Glasgow’s iconic King’s Theatre until 29th August, if you enjoy a bit of satirical humour and aren’t easily offended, I would highly recommend you catch this show!

King’s Theatre, in the heart of Glasgow’s city centre, is easily accessible with great parking (free on street parking and paid multi-story) and transport links nearby.
