Amazing, outstanding and breath-taking performance by the whole cast but Emma Williams as Annie Oakley was sublime!
The Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury is always a joy to attend not only with the fantastic acoustics but also clean and modern layout with plenty of legroom so that you aren’t sitting on the lap of the person next to you. I was slightly concerned how warm it would be in the theatre last night but it was a lovely cool temperature which gave no indication to the muggy night outside. The staff were friendly and attentive and I love how they are always wearing something relating to the performance.
Annie Get Your Gun follows the story of Annie Oakley (Emma Williams), the sharp shooting country girl and the ‘swollen headed’ Frank Butler (Jason Donovan) as they compete not only for the accolade of being the champion sharp shooter but also for each other’s hearts. Norman Pace as Buffalo Bill was fantastic keeping the story going and with an accent that was amazing – you truly believed you were in the Wild West!
Jason Donovan was of course fantastic as Frank Butler giving the perfect air of showman and also vulnerability where his heart was concerned. However, the audience was buzzing with the talk and appreciation of Emma Williams’ portrayal of Annie Oakley – the accent, the voice, the energy, the acting were all second to none! She engaged us from her first scene and wowed us with her vocals the duet between her and Jason Donovan for Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better) was simply a joy!
The show as a whole was everything you’d want a musical to be songs you can sing to, amazing choreography and a whole cast who were enthusiastic and energised!
