During these challenging times of climate change and cost of living crises, I’m always on the lookout for anything that will help alleviate both of these burdens. I’d heard of laundry eggs but have never taken the time to find out anything about them. So when the laundry egg landed on my door mat I had no expectations whatsoever. The box was very enticing; describing how the egg provides a complete replacement for all laundry detergent and fabric conditioner. It lasts up to 70 washes! It contains only gentle chemicals and has a fresh linen scent. So far so good.

Upon opening the box I found the plastic eco egg – which itself is recyclable – 3 packets of Fresh Linen laundry pellets and 1 packet of Tourmaline pellets. The box also contained an instruction leaflet, which I was relieved about, as I was pretty clueless about what I had to do next. Thankfully the instructions were clear and concise with an explanation about how to open and reseal the egg. I was to add all packets to the inside of the egg before closing it, it was the ready to place in the drum with my dirty clothes. It could be used on washes up to 60⁰ and the scent was just as fresh as any other chemical laundry detergent.

How simple! Of course I didn’t have to wait long to use it. Being a family of 4, we average 1 load of washing a day, so I would get at least 2 months out of it. It did feel quite strange putting a wash on without grabbing the giant plastic bottle of detergent and conditioner. I’ll admit, at this point, I was a little sceptical. According to the website, the pellets draw dirt away from the clothes, leaving less residue on clothes and is a recognised Allergy Friendly product. Once the wash was complete I found my clothes to be just as clean as they would be normally. I didn’t notice too much of a scent but found that once dried my clothes smelt lovely and fresh.

In all honestly, the egg exceeded my expectations. It’s so easy to use. But the cherry on the top is the price. The egg and pellet pack that I got retails at £9.99. That’s 2 month (and 10 days) washing (for me) for £9.99! But then the cost gets less once you’ve purchased your egg! The refill pellets can be bought for £4.99 (currently on sale for less) and they come in Fragrance free and Spring Blossom in addition to the Fresh Linen fragrance. The instructions also recommended that I use the Ecoegg detox tablets first for my washing machine, which I didn’t have but they retail at just £3.99. I’m just astounded by the affordability of the whole system, not only to start with but the money it will save in the long run, not to mention all the chemicals that aren’t being pumped into my clothes or the water system.

My only question is around knowing when its needs refilling, but this is simply a matter of making a record of when you got it and averaging out how many washes you do a week – noted. Also, the pellets themselves can be disposed of in the normal waste as they are completely natural mineral pellets. However, they haven’t been tested enough yet to throw them in the compost. I look forward to that update. It certainly a big decrease on the waste that my current bulky plastic detergent and conditioner bottles cause and they certainly can’t be composted. Not to mention that the cost difference is massive.

I can’t think of anyone this isn’t suitable for. Who doesn’t like saving money (and the planet!). It would make an especially great gift for a student; to help them save on laundry costs and you can even purchase a starter kit for £11.99 that includes the detox tablets. Ecoegg also offer a student discount just to make it even more affordable.

Rating: 5/5
