It is always lovely to go out for a drink but it is also really great to be able to stay in and have just as nice a drink as if you were out but without the extremely high price tag. Cocktails can be very expensive when you go out but they can also be expensive to drink at home once you buy all the different ingredients needed for them. This is where premixed cocktails could make all the difference, so I was really excited to get the opportunity to try two premixed cocktails by 1826!

1826 is a brand inspired by Thomas Lowdes who founded his business in1826 importing and exporting spirits around the world. These spirits were then used to create premium cocktails and 1826 premixed cocktails now aim to create the ultimate cocktail experience at home. I chose the Mint Julep and the Negroni to try but there are several other flavours of cocktails available from 1826 including an Espresso Martini made with Courvoisier VS Cognac and a Smoky French Martini made with Laphroaig Whisky.

Firstly I love the packaging. These are really smart looking bottles which ooze sophistication and certainly look like they will create the ultimate cocktail. I also like that the front label on the bottles give instructions on how to serve the cocktail as well as having a little picture of the best glass to use for this drink.

I tried the 1826 Mint Julep first and as soon as you opened the lid you could smell the bourbon! I added a good amount of the cocktail to a glass filled with crushed ice and then stirred it. It does recommend adding mint but unfortunately I didn’t have any. A classic mint julep is made with bourbon, sugar syrup and mint and although it doesn’t actually say the ingredients anywhere on the bottle, it tasted exactly like other good Mint Juleps I’ve drunk. It definitely tasted strong (28% alc/vol) and is therefore a cocktail to sip and savour.

Then I tried the 1826 Negroni. Again it doesn’t say what any of the ingredients are either on the bottle or on their website but a classic negroni is made of one part gin, one part vermouth rosso and one part campari. It also has a picture of the perfect glass to use (a rocks glass) and says to fill this with ice, add the Negroni and stir. It also suggests garnishing the Negroni with an orange slice. Again this is 28% alc/vol so I slowly sipped it and it tasted delicious.

These are both really nice and easy cocktails to make and it is ideal if you don’t want to create a mess! Although I must admit I did add ice and the 1827 Mint Julep to a cocktail shaker for a second serving as there is something so satisfying about using a cocktail shaker!

Each of the bottles contain 5 servings of the cocktail which means they are definitely good value for money. The one thing I didn’t like about these premixed cocktails was that neither bottle gave you any idea what ingredients were in them which is fine if you know your cocktails but if you didn’t know what was in a Mint Julep or Negroni then you would need to google it to find out.

However if you do know your cocktails then you will be pleasantly surprised how similar they taste to one which has not been premixed. If you know someone who loves cocktails but doesn’t always like the price tag that goes with them or the hassle of making them then these are the perfect present!
