Christmas is my favourite time of the year, the frosty mornings, cosy nights in and an advent calendar door to open each day in the lead up to Christmas. Over the years I’ve had many different advent calendars for the kids but I’m always on the lookout for new ideas. If you want a simple advent calendar with a chocolate a day in, then you can pop to the local shop and you’ll have a few to choose from but if you’d like something that’s a little bit different then continue reading.

When I was asked to review the Gruffalo Child’s Musical Advent Calendar, I was excited to see what was going to turn up. Gruffalo’s child has been a story that we have enjoyed for many years, as I’m sure many other households will have too, so I knew the kids would enjoy it when it arrived. Safe to say when it arrived, I was really impressed.

The advent calendar is square box which folds open and has a simple ribbon on the left-hand side to keep the back panel upright so you can see the scene throughout the month whilst you open each of the doors. The box is made from cardboard and has a magnetic base where the dancing magnetic characters turn around. There is a button on the right-hand side which you can press to hear the music. The music is the Gruffalo Child’s theme tune which fits in well with the winter scene. It includes batteries and has a small battery isolator tab which you can remove when you receive your advent calendar. If you need to change the batteries, it’s very simple to do.

There are 24 doors to open which are spread over the base and the back panel. They range from dancing characters, 3D card models, stickers and fun facts. The doors that fold out into 3D card models create a wonderful snowy scene for the characters to dance around. You can use the stickers on the advent calendar to add to the wintery scene or alternatively you can save them up and create some Christmas cards or crafts to enjoy with your little ones. I know already the stickers in our calendar will be used instantly as the kids love to stick them on their clothes.

At £25 this advent calendar is more expensive than I would have normally pay to get one advent calendar for each of my 3 children, however I would buy this for the children to share. In my opinion you could use this advent calendar again for future years and add your own stickers/treats to the doors which have space inside. Plus, with the battery pack being accessible there is no time limit on how many years you could use it for as long as you kept hold of the dancing characters.

As fun as it is to start the day with a chocolate, I think this advent calendar will be more interactive for my children and more memorable. I’m sure we will have many a bedtime story of the Gruffalo’s Child and with the Gruffalo, fox, mouse, owl, and snake to find plus lots of fun facts to read this will be a wonderful gift for young children to enjoy in the lead up to Christmas.
