Growing up I was always the person that reached for the board games, our Saturday nights used to be full of different games that we would play together and see who the overall winner would be. Games are a fantastic tool to get the family together away from the televisions and smart phones to reconnect and bring out everyone’s competitive streak so I’m keen to keep adding to our games selection and get my children involved.
Grabolo is a fun filled game perfect for children aged 4 upwards and is designed for 2-4 players. There are no complex rules and it is the quickest hand/eye that wins. It takes less than a minute to set up by opening the box and turning the pieces out on to the table and you are good to go. We ended up playing this on the floor as everyone got a little excited and pieces kept falling off the table as everyone grabbed the items. There are 6 different pieces and six different colours to choose from. Two dice determine what colour you are looking for and what piece, e.g. tree, car, pig, duck etc.
The aim of the game is to be the first person to collect the correct number of pieces before other players but remember other players can steal your pieces too. As I was playing with a 2- and 4-year-old I avoided the stealing rule as no one wants to deal with a toddler who has had their toys taken away. The kids got to grips with the rules quickly and it made a brilliant 10-minute break in the day to try something new. As the game is quick paced you can get through a few quick rounds and give everyone a chance of winning.
The game arrived in a simple cardboard box with all the items inside a plastic tub. The plastic tub houses the whole game and unlike some other board games which can be quite large and take up lots of space, this is nice and compact for storing at home/on the road. I think this game could be easily adapted too by adding extra players or changing the rules. It also makes a great tool to help with children’s imagination. My eldest had a fantastic time using all the different items to create stories once we have finished playing the game.
This would make a perfect present for any young child celebrating their birthday or Christmas. We tend to buy a new game for Christmas day to play after we’ve eaten but I think I’ll be bringing this one out this year as it’s fun for adults as well as children. Plus it’s small so it can easily slide into the changing bag!
If you are looking for a great way to get the family together for some fun, then I would highly recommend this game. It’s the perfect size to throw in your bag for meals out or long journeys and a great way to help children develop their hand eye co-ordination and memory skills.
