Having young children at home means it’s rare that my husband and I get much time together, let alone a date night. We were therefore keen to have the excuse to get one in the diary and enjoy some quality time together.
The experience arrived as a gift card with a nice notecard to allow the sender to personalise. However I did feel that the ‘gift’ aspect was a little lacking and in my opinion really should have included a little treat alongside the giftcard- it is for a special occasion afterall! Moonpig is well known for its postal gifts including boxes of chocolates, and this would certainly add to the pleasure of opening the gift and then could be enjoyed as part of the date night.
We scheduled in the next Saturday night and, with childcare taken care of, we looked forward to our date night experience. I had checked for instructions on the website on receiving the gift card which explain that you simply put in the code instead of payment when purchasing the experience. However key information was missing and on the night planned I completed this stage, only to receive an email stating that my purchase had been received and that I would receive a further email with the link for the experience attached on the next working day. Nothing could therefore be done except wait, meaning our original planned date night couldn’t happen, and was now becoming another thing to try and fit in the diary. The website information therefore needs to be updated to include this need to prebook. In fact I feel that really for ease, the instructions should be included with the gift card as no information at all comes with it meaning you need to trawl the website yourself to work it out. When I finally received the link to my experience on the Monday I noted that the information within the email states that the link works for 24 hours either side of the date booked. Having booked it for the Saturday night it meant it was already due to expire that day! Luckily an email in reply to this link email connected me to amazing.co who were very helpful and so I had no difficultly in rearranging for later in the week.
The experience includes 8 activities, and all are completed via a laptop or other similar device. All else that is needed is some paper and pens and a few hours of your time. When we were finally able to use our experience, drinks and snacks in hand, I have to say we were unfortunately a little underwhelmed. Some of the activities such as mr and mrs smith style questions and answers, and games based on your own personalised memories, raised a smile (I found the retelling of our first date one word at a time alternately between us the most different and fun to do). We also enjoyed having the chance to reminisce on past holidays and dates. However some of activities such as a celebrity quiz were very basic and simple things can easily be found with a quick google search (following lockdown I think we are all pretty apt at organizing quizzes now!). Between each activity was a task such as a riddle or puzzle which needed to be solved in order to reveal the title of the next activity. The idea behind this was good but seemed a little lacking in creativity and made them at times more frustrating or confusing than fun.
Whilst the experience did have some enjoyable activities we felt that the seemingly unnecessary access issues, and simplicity of the experience overall brought it down and we would give the experience a rating of 3 out of 5. I also feel that as it is likely to be purchased and sent as a gift, more information regarding what the experience actually involves is needed on moonpig’s website.
Rating: I would give this product a rating of 3 out of 5.
