Jumbo Games Colour Chameleon Review

Reviewed by Linda Curtain
A board game is always a great way to entertain the children and have some family time, so I was delighted to receive the Colour Chameleon game to review from Jumbo Games. Being the start of the summer holidays, this game is an ideal way for the family to settle down and interact with each other – especially on a showery, summers day.
This game is produced by The Royal Jumbo company, a well-known name in the game and puzzle field. With its main headquarters in the Netherlands, Jumbo also has offices in Germany and the UK.
Colour Chameleon is one of the new range of board games which uses 100% recycled products in its production. All the components are made by recycling old paper, shampoo bottles and wrapping paper to produce a truly eco-friendly board game.
The packaging of the game is instantly eye-catching with a very charming Chameleon smiling out from the lid. The box is extremely sturdy and would be sure to withstand children eagerly playing with it.
When we opened the box to find the instructions to follow, we were a bit disappointed to realise that you can only access them on-line – unfortunately not ideal when the game was being played in our caravan where there is no WiFi! The reason for this is explained on the inside of the box – it is all part of the eco-theme to save the use of unnecessary paper. As it was a relatively easy game to play, we were soon able to work out the rules.
To play the game each player chooses a colourful chameleon card – again a lovely, sturdy card. The dice is constructed by folding the enclosed dice template to give a dice with six different colour faces. A throw of the dice shows the player which colour spot they may choose to fill the missing spots on their Chameleon card. The rules of the game say to fill your card from the tail towards the head but with younger children the spots could be filled in randomly. A great game to strengthen colour recognition skills and the concept of taking turns.

My younger grandchildren loved it, with the four year old easily being able to sort the colours and to help her younger sister. The colours were very bright and it was clear which colour was needed to move across the Chameleon. The instructions suggest that the child wearing the brightest clothes starts the game – a novel idea instead of going by age.
The suggested age range is 3+ because of the small counters that are used and I do feel that 3-6 years is probably the suitable age range for this game. This is an ideal game to take on holiday as it is compact and sturdy. It is also quick to play and thereby holds the children’s interest.
Having enjoyed playing this game, I will certainly be looking to try the other three games in this 100% recycled range.
A great product which is fun, educational and good for the planet.
