The London Bridge Experience and Tombs Review

Reviewed by Cate Norris
This fully interactive and immersive experience takes you back in time to absorb the dark and fascinating history of the city of London. London Bridge is the central theme throughout, as it has been a stable feature for many centuries and has witnessed much of the history that has taken place. The tour starts, therefore, with a timeline of how the bridge has changed throughout the ages and an impressive earlier model of the bridge is on show. After some key events have been established through the timeline, such as Boudica’s attack against the Roman army and of course the Great Fire of London, both of which resulted in the bridge being destroyed, the remainder of the tour revolves around reliving and experiencing these events. This is achieved through suitably designed rooms, made to look and smell like they would have from the relevant point in time as well as actors who play the parts of a historical figure whilst superbly passing on their knowledge, making it the most interesting and entertaining history lesson.
Unfortunately, that’s where the enjoyment ends because after the London Bridge experience comes the Tombs which has the prestigious title of being the UK’s scariest attraction. Before entering the Tombs we were warned how dreadful it is and invited to take the escape route and not partake in the Tombs. Everybody who had completed the London Bridge Experience stayed for the Tombs, like me they must’ve thought ‘how bad can it really be?’ We were told to line up and hold onto the person in front. To be honest I wasn’t overwhelmed about having to hold on to a stranger but once I was in the Tombs I was thankful that I A. Wasn’t at the front B. That I had someone to hold on to and C. That someone was holding onto me – It was horrific! It’s dark, there are narrow passageways that you literally have to squeeze down, actual people jump out on you, actual people try to grab at you (but don’t touch) actual people swing chainsaws at you. OK it was only one chainsaw but it felt like more.
London Bridge Experience and Tombs is a great attraction that I would recommend. It’s funny, scary, educational and the staff are friendly too. What’s not to love? Warning – the Tombs are not for the fainthearted but worth it if you don’t scare too easily.
