Love Actually in Concert at the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham Review

‘Love Actually’ fans have been treated to a unique screening at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, with the 2003 film being projected onto a large screen and accompanied by a live orchestra.

The popular film was directed by Richard Curtis and stars a familiar cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightly, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth and Bill Nighy. There are 10 separate but associated stories about the different stages of love cosily set during the build up to Christmas. Even the smaller parts are played by recognisable faces, such as Rowan Atkinson as a shop assistant and Billy Bob Thornton as the lecherous American president.

The story starts and end with a scene at airport arrivals and a voiceover describing the different emotions felt as people welcome their loved ones. The ups and downs of relationships are told through stories covering topics including unrequited love, workplace affairs, bereavement and the interference of family and friends. There are lots of humorous lines along with some bittersweet experiences.

Film composer and BAFTA winner Craig Armstrong’s score as a live performance enriched the film and created even more emotion than with a traditional viewing. Having the orchestra on stage meant that you could see all the instruments and musicians at all times, which really highlighted the effort that goes into each performance. Recognisable songs included tracks by Sugababes, Dido, Eva Cassidy and Joni Mitchell.

The Royal Concert Hall is a beautiful building in the heart of the city centre with stalls and two additional seating tiers all giving excellent views of the stage. There are plenty of public car parks nearby and a tram stop right outside.  The staff were friendly and helpful and the facilities clean. Drinks and snacks were available to purchase and then take into the auditorium.

I loved the extra energy and drama created by the live music and found the whole show absorbing. If you enjoyed the film, or even if you are new to ‘Love Actually, this is definitely a performance worth watching. The tour is continuing nationwide into December and is the perfect feel good alternative to a panto or traditional theatre trip.
