My initial reaction for this review is simply… “wow!” – to be honest I think that sums it up quite well!
The production was everything and more than I expected – and as Evita is my all-time favourite production/film/story… my expectations were pretty high!
The theatre was full and buzzing with excitement yet when Bill Kenwright’s production of Tim Riceand Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical started, you could have heard a pin drop – hundreds of people sat waiting to be entertained by a fabulous cast and an amazing team!
The stage settings were very simple yet extremely effective and the choreography was mesmerising.
As per the film, featuring Madonna, some of the most spine tingling and famous music ever written was performed incredibly well, including the classic songs ", "You Must Love Me", "Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” and "Another Suitcase In Another Hall”.
This production featured multi-platinum selling artist, Marti Pellow (who shot to fame as the lead singer of Wet Wet Wet) in the role of Che – who held one note for the most incredible amount of time, but really my credit must go to Madalena Alberto, who played Evita – she was awesome. I felt every emotion and I got goose bumps when she sang!
Her portrayal of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Jan Peron, national symbol of Argentina, and eventual rise to Sainthood, was absolutely outstanding!
As people dried their eyes, a standing ovation didn’t seem enough really – but was thoroughly deserved!
This production is on at the Lowry until 10 August – book your tickets and get down there – it really isn’t one you would want to miss!
