We had a wonderful night at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow for the musical Dreamboat and Miniskirts, the sequel to the very successful Dreamboats and Petticoats, on Tuesday 11th August. This theatre has always been a favourite of mine. The staff are so helpful, cheery and chirpy, so a great start. We collected the tickets and took our seats in a very busy theatre, and while we were waiting, sang along with the sixties flavour music they had playing in the background.

The curtains opened onto a stage with a platform for a band to play, and backdrops of sixties films, music and adverts. I loved it, as I was only five when this was set. My parents taught me to love every style of music, and this was right up my street. The simple story of two teenagers, who wrote and had some success in the charts was easy to follow. Bobby, played by Alex Beaumont and Laura, Elizabeth Carter were just so believable together.

Set in 1963 is continues the story of what happened ‘Bobby & Laura’ and ‘Norman & Sue’…?

It was a joy to watch sixteen very multitalented people, enjoy the production they were part of. The voices, whether solo, in a duo or ensemble were just amazing. I laughed, sang, clapped my hands to all the songs throughout. I never realised how many of the sixties songs I knew the words for. The audience would start singing gently when the assorted songs started. I have never heard anything like it in any theatre. The band who were also part of the cast were so easy to watch, and listen to. The cast looked like they are having so much fun with this production, I am sure I even saw a bit of dad dancing in there too. I wished I could have out of my seat and danced too. It makes for a great night when the audience look as if they want to join in too.

From the instrumental Telstar, through to the dancing to Twist and Shout, on to the amazing a Capella , sixteen voices in perfect harmony, brought goosebumps up my arms. I have never heard anything like it before on stage. It looked effortless and sounded just wonderful. Well done all.

The cast seemed very comfortable with each other, and the flow was easy to see. Bobby , cute and innocent. Norman the player with his pregnant wife Sue at home. Laura pretty and sassy. Ray, as the bands manager, could really pull some dance moves, they must be natural, as I don’t think they could be taught. Reading through the programme, you just realise how talented the company are. The assistant musical director, Sheridan Lloyd also played the part of Andy. Even the tour musical director Michael Kantola was in the cast. The two ladies in the company that played the saxophone, and other instruments. Wow. To play a musical instrument, and dance… I take my hat off to you. Jeremy on the keyboard and trumpet, Richard on the base guitar, and making his professional debut was drummer Barry. I could have listened to you all night.

We had a great night. On the way out nearly everyone was singing away, you could not have asked for any better. A small cast, with huge talent. A night to remember.
