B kids ABC Touch Pad Review
ABC Touch Pad

This toy tablet aimed at babies and children above 6 months came in relatively minimal packaging. A box that kept the touch pad in good shape in the post, but there was no awful polystyrene and no need for scissors. Good news for those (like me!) who hate endless and impossible plastic ties, three twists of plastic tabs and the toy is freed from its box! Even better, the batteries were provided, so we got going straight away.
The instructions were to the point and clear, but the touch pad really isn’t hard to use: it’s just handy to have a few pointers to get started.
I’m not going to debate the merits or otherwise of noisy plastic toys. The touch pad is noisy (with a two volume setting since you ask) and it’s plastic. If that’s not your thing, stop reading!
My one year old went straight for the button at the bottom of the touch pad, playing the alphabet song endlessly before her older sister pointed out the other functions. They are not vast: letters, numbers, follow the lights and music. Don’t expect real tablet like functions (being able to move icons around the screen or apps), but you can do pretty much all you’d want for a noisy toy aimed at this age group. And for the price, that’s what I’d expect.
Having said that, my four year old also had a lot of fun, carrying the touch pad along like an 80s ghetto blaster and singing along with the alphabet song. She was a little worried by the American ‘zee’ at the end, but compensated by singing extra loudly ‘zed’ over the top!
The toy feels pretty solid and has taken a fair bit of bashing, passing the ‘crash into the wall’ test as well as the ‘new teeth gnaw’. There are thoughtfully placed grooves at the back – perfect for chubby little fingers to grip onto.
The touch pad seems reasonable value for money. Because the screen is flat, there seems a little less to hold a young child’s interest than some other noisy toys with buttons and twisters. However, flashing lights and noise do go a long way. Your little one might pick up the odd animal noise or start to hum the alphabet song. More importantly, if my baby is anything to go by, they’ll have fun on the way!
