I’ve heard nothing but positive comments about The Alhambra Theatre in Bradford and now I can understand why. The location is good with accessible parking in both directions, no more than a street away. From the moment you walk through the doors you feel it’s history and prestige. The theatre itself is maintained very well, and the staff were attentive and helpful to all customers’ needs. It’s a simple theatre which has plenty of character. Initially, I was concerned there was only the one bar, until I realised there was more to come.

When I initially walked through the curtains and down the steps, the theatre took my breath away. It was far bigger than I anticipated and there was the spectacular bar on stage as part of the show. Myself and all the customers were able to order a pint from this bar which was part of the set. It was brilliant as me and many members of the audience were able to take photos and even interact with the cast. It created a real buzz before the show began.

The way the cast were interacting with the audience really set the tone for the energetic, engaging, boisterous show that was upon us and every member of the audience was excited for what was to come. It’s safe to say we were not disappointed. The Choir of Man has far more layers to it than I was expecting, there was joy, there was heart-felt moments, there were moments to reflect and multiple moments of laughter.

The way it captures what the pub means to men from all walks of life is fantastic. It’s very accurate and relatable because each of the characters represents us all at some stage of our lives, but the thing that remains constant is the what the pub means to them. In today’s society, maybe this has been lost a little. There were many moments through the show where I couldn’t help but agree.

The cast was fantastic, the energy, the charm, the realism. There was a real sense of togetherness, and they were just a group of men enjoying themselves/character. There were many naturally funny moments which had the crowd in laughter but also the cast, which again made it all very real and relatable. Their harmonies were incredible and the choice of songs fitted the story like a glove. You can’t resist but to sing along with everyone.

A beautiful touching moment to finish the show as an acapella with two choirs from the audience (totally 354 people). I feel lucky and privileged to witness this moment. I am not afraid to admit it, but having taken a friend of mine along, as two men in their 30s, this show resonated with us and for the show’s duration, made us feel part of something special – heard, supported and part of a community.
