No childhood is complete without walkie-talkies! Technology has come a long way since my own childhood and inventive brands such as Com_Creator are now offering video walkie-talkies for Gen Alpha. These devices have a 2 inch display for face-to-face chats in addition to the good old-fashioned audio option. Kids these days are used to video chatting with their loved ones, so this is an intuitive offering.

As you’d expect, these walkie-talkies come as a pair, one in red and the other a minty green. They’re larger than our standard walkie-talkies but this is to be expected given the additional features. Even so, we didn’t find them heavy or cumbersome. I like that they come with a silicon wrist strap for when little hands inevitably drop them!

Also in the box is a set of instructions for use (in multiple languages) and a USB C charging cable. I love that these are rechargeable making them greener and more convenient than batteries. Additionally, USB C is so central to life now that you’ll have no problems finding a charger if you happen to mislay this one or are charging away from home. Whilst charging they have a red light indicating charging in progress which is not only handy but removes the “are they ready yet?” question.

Performance-wise, we first tried the video option, and I sent my daughter and husband off on an outdoor walk to test the range. The manufacturer boasts a 300m range on the video setting, however we did find that this really applied to line of sight. When there was a building in between the devices they failed but they did operate at an impressive distance across open land such as the garden.

While using the video setting both users can see the other caller with a smaller display of themselves. If you prefer this can be reversed in a press of a button. It’s just like making a video call on your phone. Additionally both users can apply a selection of graphics to their image which appear on the screen of the other unit. We enjoyed looking through the twenty choices and applying them however many didn’t quite work as they weren’t positioned right for small arm distance. The instructions show they should be held 25cm away but even so graphics such as the beard don’t fit your face. However there are filters and frames which can be applied to the whole screen and these worked better.

In either video or voice setting you can also apply vocal filters. There are 5 to choose from including alien, baby, and robot. The symbols for the options aren’t always clear (is it a duck?) but it’s fun to try them out anyway!

The buttons are easily recognisable symbols, and we first used the walkie-talkies without having read the instructions which just goes to show how straightforward they are. The menu for switching between audio and video is really simple and then you press the home button to pair them. While out on a woodland walk we lost connection on video setting while we were exploring the woods and found that we had to reconvene to pair them on the audio setting. Once this was done the range was great and actually pretty handy when half of the party has disappeared into the trees to explore!

The one issue we occasionally had with the walkie-talkies was that in pressing down the button on the right-hand side to speak, as with conventional walkie-talkies, we found ourselves unknowingly pressing the volume button on the left-hand side simultaneously. This meant that at times we thought they weren’t working properly when we’d actually muted one another by accident.

Overall we really enjoyed putting these units through their paces and it made our walks extra fun. I can imagine these being a brilliant Easter present, bringing an Easter egg hunt to another level!
