As a parent I just love the different seasons and celebrations and being able to theme decorations and activities for my children.  Receiving the Halloween Themed Toucan box was therefore perfect as I have heard about these before and been wanting to try now by children are old enough.  This themed box is one of Toucan boxes limited edition bumper boxes.

Immediately the box shows its theme, with bright and colourful striking illustrations, appealing to children of many ages and adults alike.  The box is certainly eye catching and I liked the details of the pretend ‘ghost office’ stamp with the parcel being sent ‘fright class.’  The box opens easily and can be used to keep items in.  Like my child, I was keen to delve in and explore what the box contained.  I was impressed by the amount of different activities and items that it contained.  A magazine included colouring, spellings, spot the difference and three other recipes and craft activity ideas with instructions.  There were then four main creative activities (a creepy critters wreath, spider web art, a luminous lantern and spider web cakes), each with detailed instructions and (almost all) the bits required to make.

My little boy loved making the cakes which required a few extra cupboard ingredients.  They were very tasty and my little boy requested to make them again after trying one!  For me the cake cases were a little large for the amount of batter it made however this is a very minor thing.  A Halloween themed book, designed and made specifically for toucan boxes was also included.  If this wasn’t enough a sheet of stickers, trick or treat sign and fizzing spell recipe sheet were also in the box.

I was impressed by the variety of what was included and as a busy working parent being able to have different creative activities ready to go without much preparation or requirement to ensure the right things are purchased in advance was just brilliant.  The toucan boxes are aimed at 3-8 year olds and I therefore depending on the age of your child, some of the activities do require a fair bit of adult support.

I was keen to learn more about the different boxes on offer and so had a browse of the Toucan box website.  Generally toucan boxes are designed as a kids craft subscription service and come monthly to your door.  Postage is free and payments can be one off without a commitment, monthly on a 12 plan or annually.  These monthly boxes are smaller than this bumper box but are cleverly designed to fit through your letterbox.  Each one therefore contains two craft activities, a magazine, stickers and a grown up guide on developmental skills your child is learning.  Themes are chosen to help educate children through play and crafts and are based on educational curriculums to help develop social, cognitive and motor skills.  Examples on the website include a ‘nature explorers box’ and ‘blast off box.’  I really liked the idea that when you have regular boxes they are personalised to your child’s name, another lovely little detail.

I loved how there are a range of purchase options so depending on your need as a family you can still make use of the pre prepared activities.  For example, for those just wanting one or two different themed activities can be purchased separately if required rather than buying the whole bumper box.  This does make each of the activities much more expensive (for example the spider cakes would be £9.95) however it is great to have the option.

A great Halloween gift idea and I will certainly be looking into the regular subscription options for my own children and as potential gifts in the future as I think the whole idea is brilliant for busy parents and their children to encourage creativity and shape learning through play.
