I got this book for myself hoping it might help me to relax at bedtime and enable me to get off to sleep better. I have never tried mindfulness before so I am not sure how I will get on with this.

This book is written by Neil Seligman, who is a master mindfulness teacher and pioneer of the Conscious Leadership movement. He believes firmly in the possibility of bringing conscious solutions to the challenges of our world.
Inside this book there are a hundred precisely described meditations, activities and games to help you learn mindfulness skills, make them part of your daily life and share them with others. The book is organised into three parts: Foundations for Mindfulness Practice, Applying Mindfulness in Daily Life and Advanced Practices. Together they build a thorough mix of mindfulness meditations that can enhance creativity, build happiness joy and compassion, reduce stress and anxiety, and help with inner calm. There are also many quotes throughout the book – the first one “Sometimes, simply by sitting, the soul collects wisdom”. These quotes definitely make you think and make you realise that everyone should slow down and take some time for themselves.

The first chapter gives three essential foundations for the practice of mindfulness. It explains techniques for how to improve your posture, be aware of your breathing and how to keep a positive attitude. It then goes on to say that you should know your body and be aware of all the things around you – listening to sounds that you have previously taken for granted. Knowing how to sit and be comfortable and being aware of the sensation of breathing are the key to being able to engage with the practice of mindfulness.

I have been working through the first few pages, getting used to being aware of my breathing and counting with my breathing to slow it down. I know that I will need more time to get these first steps perfected, which I will need to do before I move on to the following chapters.

Part B – applying mindfulness in daily life has seven sections which can be practiced in any order depending on what it is that you are trying to achieve. For example it includes a daily practices, a difficult days section , a mindfulness with children section and a section with fun mindfulness activities.

Part C – advanced practices has three sections which again can be done in any order depending on what you are looking to achieve and your personal circumstances and lifestyle.

I am really looking forward to getting to grips with this practice and will work through the book in time. I think it will give me a new sense of calm, help me switch off at bed time which in turn will help me to relax and sleep at night time.
