Z Cars is a police drama that was first shown in 1962 and run until 1978. Z Cars Collection One consists of 6 colour episodes from 1972:

Episode 1: Loyalties
Episode 2: Relative Values
Episode 3: Not Good Enough
Episode 4: Breakage
Episode 5: Connor
Episode 6: The Team

Z Cars is set in Liverpool in the fictional town of Newtown. The police and starting to walk the beat less and are spending more time in police cars – known as Z-Cars.

Z Car follows the police investigating crimes where whole families were involved in crime and also shows the personal lives of the police and criminals and their families. The collection shows old fashioned policing where the criminals were actually in fear of the police and when the new DI joins he spends a day driving around Newtown introducing himself to the known criminals and marking their cards.

Overall, Z Cars Collection One is a gritty police drama that I found quite slow to get going, possibly because I expected more involvement with the cars and car chases which didn’t happen (at least not in these 6 episodes). In fairness it is a more realistic look at policing and how they used to go about the everyday tasks of catching criminals.

While it didn’t have enough action for me for anybody that remembers the original series and knows the characters better it would make a good box set.
