YO! Sushi Trinity Leeds Review

Reviewed by Emma Lydon

On being chosen to review a YO! Sushi restaurant my husband and I were very much looking forward to trying out some new dishes, as we were both sushi and Japanese food novices. We chose to visit the YO! Sushi in the relatively new Trinity Centre in Leeds, the restaurant itself located perfectly among the other eateries available.

We arrived at midday and were immediately met by a lovely member of staff who gave us a number of options of where to sit. It was not too busy, but then again we probably arrived before the main lunchtime trade. We were shown to our table, given our menus and asked if we had ever visited a YO! Sushi before. On learning that it was our first visit, the waitress could not have been more helpful in going through the menu and showing us how the ordering system works.

Cold sushi dishes and desserts were readily at hand on the revolving belt, available to pick and choose from at our leisure. Any hot dishes from the menu could be easily ordered by pressing the button on our table. I particularly liked the addition of both still and fizzy (and free of charge I might add) water taps on each table, along with the two choices of chopsticks (original chopsticks and some easy to use ones which was a relief!). We made a few selections from the hot menu and within a minute of pressing our order button we were met with another lovely member of staff who took our order.

While waiting for our hot food to arrive (which was not very long at all) we tried two dishes from the sushi belt – the Spicy Chicken Iso and the Crispy Salmon Skin. Both were enjoyable and tasted very fresh, however for both myself and my husband the real treat came with the hot food. We tried the Chicken Yakisoba (a noodle dish), Popcorn Shrimp Tempura, Chicken Katsu (chicken thigh in breadcrumbs) and one of the specials, the Beef & Garlic Teriyaki. Each and every dish was just delicious. The teriyaki being my husband’s favourite and the tempura my own. Upon devouring every last bite, we just had to try one more dish, the Duck Gyoza (dumplings). Again, really lovely food, with the additional hoisin sauce being the best I think I have ever tasted.

The price of the dishes ranges from a very reasonable £1.90 to £6 for the specials and it is really easy to keep a check on what you are spending as each plate is colour coded and added up at the end. The only difficulty is knowing when to stop!

The restaurant itself was bright, colourful and clean and I did notice that there was high chair facilities provided. Prior to my visit it would not have been somewhere that I would have visited with my two young children (4 and 2) as I assumed that the food would not be to their taste. After sampling some truly delicious food, however, and seeing what a fantastic range they have available to choose from I can honestly say that I think my kids would love not only the food but the whole YO! Sushi experience.

To sum up: great location, helpful and friendly staff, amazing food and reasonable prices. I for one will be visiting again.
