Who doesn’t remember a marble run from their childhood! In many ways, they have changed a lot from when I was a child, but the fundamental joy of watching a marble whizzing around a circuit that you have built remains! I had the pleasure of reviewing the VTech Marble Rush Magnetic Magic® and the nostalgia of a marble run came flooding back to me, whilst creating new memories with the children that I shared it with. I am a big fan of VTech® products. I personally believe that they create long-lasting toys with educational benefits, as well as incorporating elements of sound and flashing lights which appeal to children (and adults) of all ages! The VTech Marble Rush Magnetic Magic® set did not disappoint.

The VTech Marble Rush Magnetic Magic® set arrived packaged in a sturdy cardboard box (45 cm x 33 cm x 13.5 cm), and inside were different pieces of the set – some wrapped in paper tubes, some in plastic bags – but 120 building pieces in total! I found it useful that different colours of the plastic pieces had been separated as it made putting the marble run together much easier and allowed all members of the family to join in. Included inside the box was an A4 assembly guide, a smaller ‘quick-start’ guide and astronomy themed stickers to decorate the VTech Marble Rush® with.

We found, when we began constructing the Marble Rush Magnetic Magic®, that you did not have to use all of the 120 pieces. There are three different build levels and so, as a beginner, you can experiment with as little as 20 to 40 pieces before then increasing, incrementally, up to the builds using 90+ pieces. The pieces themselves are made of sturdy plastic, and I did find that younger children needed a bit of help connecting the pieces as you had to push them together tightly. However, this allowed collaboration between children and adults – a skill that needs to be modelled. Some of the other developmental skills which can be focused on using the VTech Marble Rush® set were construction, problem solving, experimentation and patience to name but a few, all whilst having fun of course!

One of our favourite parts of the Marble Rush Magnetic Magic® was the shuttle launcher as it contains flashing coloured lights and music. Also, when you put one of the five ‘mega marbles’ into the shuttle, it causes the exciting ‘blast off’ moment!

Another fantastic asset of the VTech Marble Rush® sets is that they are connectable. Therefore, the ‘Magnetic Magic’ set would be able to be played with alongside the other sets in the VTech Marble Rush® series including the Adventure Set, the Game Zone and the Launch Pad. This can be useful as if you have more than one child or group of children, they can be working on different sets simultaneously before putting them together to create one giant marble run! You just need space and a flat surface to build the sets on.

I absolutely loved this VTech Marble Rush Magnetic Magic® set and believe that it is value for money. It is a classic rainy day or indoor activity which can be constructed during a weekend or school holiday, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I would recommend it as a gift for a child or family, and I believe that it is ideally suited to those aged 4-11. Saying that, it is also an activity that all members of the family would enjoy, young or old.
