Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14 and ordinarily it is a time when many people get dressed up and go to a local pub or restaurant for a romantic meal with their other half. This year is a little different but that doesn’t mean Valentine’s Day can’t be special, we have all got used to spending more time at home and this year Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to try some new food and drink and have a cosy night in with a loved one.
I have been fortunate to try a couple of products that would be perfect for a date night at home, Doughlicious gourmet cookie dough and Caleno non alcoholic spirit.
After a delicious home cooked Valentine’s meal, what better way to end it than with some delicious home baked cookies? Everyone loves the smell and taste of home made cookies however not everyone has the time or confidence to make their own. This is where Doughlicious gourmet cookie dough comes in, each pack contains 6 perfectly formed cookie dough balls that just need to be placed on a baking lined with baking paper and baked for 12 – 15 minutes.
Doughlicious is the brainchild of Kathryn Bricken, she has a passion for baking and became famous amongst her friends for baking the best American style cookies using the finest natural ingredients. She was often asked to make extra dough for friends and in 2014 she decided to share her secret with the rest of the UK. All Doughlicious cookie dough flavours are gluten free and there are also dairy free, organic and vegan flavours. Everything is made with the finest ingredients and no artificial additives or preservatives.
My delivery of Doughlicious cookie dough was very well packaged in a foil freezer bag with freezer blocks to keep the dough cold, once unpacked you can keep the dough in the fridge or freezer until you are ready to bake them. All my boxes had long use by dates so I put them in the fridge although they are so delicious they have only lasted two days!
There are 13 flavours of cookie dough and I received the Chocolate Chip, Chocolate and Vanilla, Raspberry White Chocolate and Red Velvet and White Chocolate flavours. We enjoyed them all and it was so nice to bake cookies without any mess or washing up afterwards! They are the perfect treat for Valentine’s Day and at only £3.99 per box you can keep some in the fridge or freezer and have cookies whenever you fancy.
To wash down the cookies we had a couple of glasses of Caleno which is a light and zesty tropical non alcoholic spirit. Whilst I do enjoy alcoholic drinks now I have children the last thing I want on a weekend morning is a hangover so Caleno is perfect when you want something special that isn’t alcoholic!
Caleno was born out of frustration when the founder, Ellie was on an alcohol free night out with friends. She was uninspired by the alcohol free drinks on offer and decided it was time to do something about it. Caleno first came to life in her kitchen and following a trip to Columbia where she was inspired by her Latin roots she decided to infuse the sun drenched flavours of Columbia with her non alcoholic spirits. The result is a lovely zesty infusion of tropical, citrus and spice botanicals which is really pleasant to drink. An added bonus is that Caleno is sugar free and only contains 39kcal per 100ml so much better for your waistline too!
We had a look at the Caleno website to see how best to drink Caleno, one suggestion is to mix 50ml with 200ml of premium tonic water and serving it over ice. This makes a lovely refreshing drink and we both really enjoyed this. We also tried the Tropi-Cali which is 50ml Caleno, 20ml pineapple juice, 15ml fresh lemon juice, 15ml 2:1 sugar syrup or gomme and 6-8 mint leaves to garnish. You make this like a cocktail, shaking it, straining it and garnishing with mint leaves. I really enjoyed this cocktail and didn’t miss the alcohol at all!
I am so pleased I have now found a non alcoholic drink that not only tastes nice but isn’t dull and boring! I can see myself enjoying Caleno on a lovely warm day sat on the patio in the sunshine with friends.
Caleno also have a dark and spicy version which is a rich blend of pineapple, coconut, ginger, black cardamon, vanilla, kola nut and lime and I can’t wait to try this.
If you are looking for a non alcoholic drink to try for your Valentine’s celebrations then I can highly recommend Caleno.
