After trying the Treads Foot Measuring Gauge last month and sizing the kids feet, we were really excited when the postman brought two pairs of school shoes for the kids to try on. My girls are 10 and 7, and I had let them each choose the shoes they liked best from the website. Every single pair on there is a proper, black leather school shoe and is backed by the 12-month indestructible guarantee, so I was happy to let them have free choice as to which pair they wanted.
My youngest can’t yet tie her own laces, so we needed a Velcro shoe for her – there were plenty to choose from, but she wanted a ‘girly’ pair and fell in love with the Adelaide Velcro fastening T-bar style shoes. My eldest was slightly more limited – she would have had the same as her sister, but these are only available in smaller sizes, and given as she can tie her own laces and wanted a little bit of a feel, chose the Montana brogue shoe.
With my youngest, we had been on the cusp of two sizes, and being a mum, opted for the larger of the two when ordering because she’s due a growth spurt! I needn’t have done, because of the dual-fit system, these are sized slightly bigger and when they arrived, they had just that little bit too much ‘growing room’ in them and I knew I would have to exchange them! The process with Treads is incredibly simple and is also free! The shoes came with their own returns label, so all I needed to do was fill in the form, indicating that I wanted to exchange for the next size down, parcel them up and drop them off at the local newsagent; it couldn’t be easier.
In spite of our small hiccup, I have to say that I am incredibly impressed with the shoes. The pair that we ordered for my eldest fitted perfectly and she is over the moon with them. They are incredibly comfortable, and she said they feel great to walk in. They also look incredibly smart and are very easy for her to get on and off.
The quality of the leather is absolutely the best that we have every had on a pair of school shoes – both of my two have habits of scraping their toes, so we very often find that the tips of the toes can become separated from the upper of the shoe. This won’t happen with the Treads shoes because the shoe is actually moulded together, rather than glued or stitched, so there is nothing to split or come away. There is also plenty of cushioning and shock absorbing soles for extra comfort for playing out, and reinforced seams and heels for increased durability.
Our replacement Adelaide shoes arrived within a few days of returning the ones that were too big, and these ones fit like a glove. It just goes to show that you should trust the sizer, rather than trying to second guess it and go for bigger shoes – the dual-fit system already allows for the growing room anyway!
I am really impressed with both pairs of shoes. I have every confidence that they will stand the test of time, and last the school year. They feel far sturdier than any school shoes I have bought before and they look fabulous.
