Thriller Live is an energetic event showcasing the music of Michael Jackson. Running for over 2 hours, the set list includes all your favourite numbers, plus some songs you may have forgotten.
I went to see the show at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham; a great venue in the centre of the city where the staff are always welcoming. We were treated to a piano accompaniment with our pre-show drinks as we sat in the upstairs bar. There was a variety of merchandise on sale including MJ’s trademark hat and white gloves.
Once in our seats we discovered the auditorium was surprisingly empty. Luckily the audience had enough energy to keep the cast going as this was a shame for such a fabulous show. We were treated to a chronological medley of songs, starting with music by the Jackson 5 including ‘I’ll be there’ and ‘ABC’, all the way through to solo work such as ‘Bad’ and ‘They don’t care about us’.
Five main vocalists took it in turns to lead the songs, all of whom did a fantastic job of recreating his voice and moves. They were accompanied by talented dancers, who along with the screens on stage, made it feel like we were watching a music video. There were frequent costume changes, all in keeping with the style at the time such as the neon prints for ‘Blame it on the boogie’ to the terrifying costumes for ‘Thriller’. The choreography was also impressive, with the trademark lean during ‘Smooth criminal’ and the classic moonwalk all contributing to the feeling of being at a Michael Jackson concert.
There were a number of times where the cast gave some background information about a song before it was performed, but in general the focus was on the music. Despite a reduced size of audience, they also managed to get people up on the feet and singing and dancing along. This show really does do justice to the talent that was Michael Jackson and I would encourage everyone to go along for a fun night, whether already familiar with his work or not.
Tickets cost from £13 (plus £3.65 transaction fee).
