The Iron Lady is an intimate look into the life of the United Kingdom’s first and only female Prime Minister.
Margaret Thatcher was a grocer’s daughter from Grantham, Lincolnshire. After graduating from Oxford she become a chemist and then a trained as a taxation lawyer before entering politics, becoming a Member of Parliament for Finchley before running for leader of the Conservative Party and eventually becoming Prime Minister and the most powerful woman in British politics (she was Prime Minister from 1979-1990, serving 11½ years).
This film is a great portrayal of Lady Thatcher’s life from humble beginnings as a grocer’s daughter she rose up through the Conservative Party to become leader even though everybody, including herself, thought she would not be able to it.
It shows what a strong, independent, uncompromising and stubborn woman she was and determined to get her own way, at times at the expense of her family. It shows all the major points of her career – trying to break the unions, the miner’s strike, the bombing of the Grand Hotel in an attempt to kill her, the Falklands War and the Poll Tax riots.
It also focuses on her mental problems in later life as throughout the film she is always talking things over with her dead husband Denis (who she loved dearly).
Love or loathe her, this film shows how her spirit and determination got her to the top and changed the face of British politics. A great insight into her life and is a very compelling drama. Meryl Streep plays the part of Lady Margaret Thatcher superbly, she is made up beautifully to look like her, her accent is great and even her movement and mannerisms are perfect which creates an overall wonderful effect. A very believable portrayal from Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent.
Lots of Special Features on the disc with some great featurettes. Great value for money.
Highly recommended.
