We were invited to go and see The Dolly Parton Story at the Grove Theatre in Dunstable. I picked up my complimentary tickets & was directed where to go for my seats. I went to the bar to get a couple of drinks, the bar staff were friendly & polite.
I took my mum with me & we found our seats we were in stalls Row D, great seats. The show more or less started on time. The first half of the show was brilliant the performer had a great costume & fantastic American accent (we assumed she was American), later on in the 2nd act after the interval she announced she was from up North which had the audience in stiches. The performer introduced the rest of the band who were great. After the first song Dolly started to tell her biography in between each song, it was very interesting & believable. Dolly was very entertaining and humoures she captured the audience from start to finish. I was amazed at the mix of audience and quite shocked at how young some of the guests were. I got the impression there was some real Dolly Parton fans and at the interval we started chatting to a few who were all blown away with the show so far.
The 2nd half of the show was fabulous, my only criticism was it was over far too quick only because we was really enjoying it, it was really good. I think the length was ok but I think the audience would have happily watched Dolly sing and perform for at least another ½ hour but I realise it's a long time for a performer to sing. The 2nd half was really entertaining, again great costumes and a little encore at the end. The performer was very convincing with her accent & sang beautifully.
My mum & myself thoroughly enjoyed the show. I was really interested in the story and has inspired me to play and listen to more of Dolly's music. I like the fact that a lot of the songs are based on true events. When the performer sang one of her own songs it was magnificent. I bumped into a friend today who also was in our row & there last night she said she had been to see the real Dolly Parton at O2 and last night's show was just as good!
The Grove Theatre is a great venue was clean with friendly and helpful staff.
Worth every penny. I'd definitely book up & watch again.
