I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy this. It isn’t what you expect though, it’s entertaining, it’s educational and it’s inspiring.
We hear the story of Charlie Fowler, a marine who loses a leg in Afghanistan and is telling his story along with a cast of other soldiers. It tells you what it’s really like to be a squaddie, what it’s like in training, why they sign up, and what the families think back home.
Do you really know what the war in Afghanistan is about? Did you know the British were first there in 1839? The story of these soldiers is broken up with background on how the war cane about, and again later we see some beautiful choreography with screens of soldiers telling their personal stories too. Surprisingly, there is a strong storyline throughout for each of the characters.
You might worry that this is about feeling sorry for our soldiers who are through the worst of it and out the other side. It’s not – it’s about educating us, the audience and the public about the details of serving in the forces and being grateful.
I would go and see this again, if only to see Marine Cassidy Little again. The line between soldier telling his story and actor playing a role is very blurred here. His story telling ability made me think this should be turned into a film, not just a play. Excellent performances throughout from the whole cast, all of whom capture your attention.
Highly recommended – just watch out for the loud noises!
