As a child of the 80s I was both fascinated by the 1975 release of Jaws and then ultimately terrified of getting into a small boat, and when I did set foot on an ocean faring vessel there was always the key catchphrase of “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” I was very excited to hear that coming to the Lighthouse was yet another show that had come off Broadway and the West End. Starting at Edinburgh Fringe in 2019, The Shark is Broken has proved itself as a hit, with other shows being cancelled at Fringe to allow for more stage time for The Shark is Broken. Co-written and starring Ian Shaw, none other than the son of legendary actor Robert Shaw. I’m expecting an uncanny resemblance when it arrives in Poole.
So, what is the show about? It’s pitched as ‘Three men in a boat – plus a malfunctioning shark and a load of laughs.’ The original film was plagued with issues, from arguments between the actors, boats sinking, script changes etc with this show focusing on the gaps between the filming, especially the three lead actors being stuck on a boat for 16 weeks. I’m definitely hoping for a lot of laughs and an insight into all what happened behind the scenes.
The Shark is Broken is in the Lighthouse from Tuesday 29th April until Saturday 3rd May. Tickets start from £25 which is a great price to pay for a show that’s come from Broadway and the West End. The running time is 1 hour and 30 minutes with no internal in the show so it runs right through, so I’m looking forward to having a laugh, seeing a great show and still making it home while it’s light.
Tickets can be purchased online from www.lighthousepoole.co.uk or through the box office on 01202 280000
