On Friday night we visited The Magnum Restaurant on Albany Street in Edinburgh for dinner. To get there we found it only to be a short walk and easy to find off the high street as we are currently staying on the Royal Mile.

Upon entering we were welcomed by the staff and given a choice of tables, all candle lit and cosy. Fairy lights in the windows chandlers on the ceiling and tea lights on the features paints the scene for a nice romantic meal for two in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

The menu had a wide variety of food to suit all the customer’s needs and tastes, so even the fussiest of eaters should find something suitable.

The drinks choice was endless. I was happy enough having Peroni on tap but looking through the drinks menu we had an extensive list of lagers, wines, ales, whiskeys, champagne and soft drinks to choose from.

We both had the homemade soup of the day (£4.95) with thick cut granary bread. We would both recommend this as it was gorgeous and the portion size was adequate. After a full day seeing the sights of Edinburgh it was perfect to start the evening with.

For the main course we both had the 22oz Scottish steak – served with hand cut chips, grilled baby tomatoes, redcurrant jus and rocket salad (£22.50). Myself I had it with the house preferred sauce which complimented the steak well.

My partner prefers more of a stilton/cheese based sauce with her steak and the chef was happy enough to accommodate her needs. Both steaks were cooked to perfection.

For desert I had the chocolate fudge cake with butterscotch sauce and salted caramel ice cream (£6.50) which was perfect to finish off the meal and my partner had the cranachan cheesecake with raspberry compote and coulis (£6.25). Needless to say we both cleaned the plates.

Overall the quality of all the courses was excellent, delicious and value for money. We found the meal to be reasonably priced. The staff was both helpful, professional and most of all friendly.

We both would highly recommend the Magnum Restaurant and Bar and when we are back in the area we will be sure to return.

An excellent end to a day of seeing the sights of Edinburgh.
