The Little Mermaid Jr at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre Review

2-4 August 2018

Reviewed by Lindsay Burton

The story, based on the famous Hans Christian Anderson tale and the popular Disney film, is about a young mermaid, Ariel (Isabella Keeling), who is willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul. Bargaining with the creature Ursula (Josefina Round), she takes desperate measures to achieve this goal. Will she get Prince Eric (Mackenzie Tyler-Reynolds) to kiss her and break the spell?

The talent in the cast of the Stafford Gatehouse Summer Project completely blew me away! Director Nick Earnshaw presents this energetic and charming summer project backed by a lovely, familiar musical score. The stage was truly transformed into a magical under the sea kingdom by talented set and stage designer, Nick Murley.

With the stage filled with little superstars, special mention has to be made of Isabella Keeling (Ariel) and Josefina Round (Ursula) who both impressed me with their vocals AND their sheer acting ability which will see them go far on stage! Charlie Tiernan (Sebastian) and Toby Foetu-Foster (Flounder) also provided the audience with many side-splitting moments, probably both my favourite by far!

2007 saw the 25th anniversary of the Borough Hall being reopens as Stafford Gatehouse Theatre, by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester. The Borough Hall was originally opened on 20 June 1877 and the building once housed Stafford Borough Council. Since opening, the venue has experienced great success, both with touring professional shows and amateur productions.

With the running time just little over an hour, this show is perfect for a first-time theatre experience. If you are in the area, make sure you catch this performance.
