Yesterday we attended one of The Jockey Clubs ‘Newmarket Nights’ held at The July Course in Newmarket. Located in Suffolk and just 14 miles from Cambridge, Newmarket is known as the home of horse racing.

Newmarket benefits from two racecourses, The July Course and The Rowley Mile Course, our event was held at The July Course, which is justifiably described as an outdoor venue in the heart of East Anglia.

Newmarket Nights, held on certain dates throughout the summer, combines the thrill of horse racing with the excitement of live music performed by a variety of renowned artists.

The headliner for our Newmarket Night event was the legendary Sir Tom Jones!

The venue, which can be easily found using the postcode CB8 0XE, opened at 3.45pm and is well signposted as you approach Newmarket, we drove into the ample public car park which is free to all those attending the race meeting.

The weather was perfect, although it had been a rainy day, the rain had stopped and we were blessed with late afternoon and evening sunshine.

A short walk from the car park brings you to the impressive entrances of the July Course, again everything is well signposted and there are members of staff available to guide you to where you wish to be.

Newmarket Racecourse has its own app that you can download from the App store or Google Play, within the App you can find lots of very useful information including a plan of the racecourse and facts about the horses and their jockeys, I highly recommend using the app as it was very informative.

The first of the six races started at 5.45pm, so there was plenty of time to familiarise ourselves with the facilities available.

There were ample food and drink outlets offering for example pizzas, sausages, loaded chips and hot and cold drinks, there are plenty of bars throughout the course, although be prepared to queue! The well presented toilet facilities can be easily found, however again, at times, be prepared to queue for the Ladies!

We wondered through to the Parade Ring and admired the immaculately kept lawns, flower beds and baskets along the way. The horses looked magnificent as they paraded round and the anticipation and buzz of the crowd increased closer to the start of every race. The commentary over the speakers for every race was extremely clear to hear and very informative. There was also the advantage of being able to watch the race unfold on the many huge screens which were placed at various locations throughout the racecourse.

I was delighted as I chose two winners from the six races!

The horse racing finished at 8.30pm, but of course we still had Sir Tom Jones performing live to look forward to! We made our way to the area where the raised stage was, the excitement of the vast crowd was electric with lots of happy race goers enjoying the party atmosphere!

At 8.50pm, Sir Tom Jones entered the stage, the great cheer of the crowd erupted everywhere, there he was, the legendary singer performing in front of us!

The amazing Sir Tom proceeded to entertain us for almost two hours, his strong voice didn’t disappoint and neither did the variety of the songs he sang, with many highlights including What’s New Pussycat, Delilah and Sex Bomb!

The crowd were singing, dancing and cheering throughout his performance. It was certainly a fabulous night to remember!!

I would thoroughly recommend attending a Jockey Club Live event which are held at various racecourses throughout the country, you will certainly have a memorable experience!
