The Illegal Eagles 2018 at the Preston Guild Hall Review

In 1995 I was fortunate enough to see The Eagles play live and it’s still one of the most amazing gigs I’ve ever been to.

The Illegal Eagles are claimed to be the World’s Official No.1 Eagles tribute band and having been performing for 20 years I was, as an Eagles fan surprised I’d not seen them before now.

The venue was the Charter Theatre in Preston’s Guild Hall. By the time I took my seat it was packed so these guys obviously have a big following and tonight was one of a 140 date tour!

I must be honest and say that I was feeling slightly nervous as the lights went down remembering the last time I’d heard these songs played live but I had nothing to worry about.

From the intro of Take It Easy sung by the youngest member of the band Mike Baker to Tequila Sunrise sung by Gareth Hicklin, via Don Henley’s Heart of the Matter sung by Greg Webb, followed by Christian Phillips beautiful version of I Can’t Tell You Why, along with other classics such as Peaceful Easy Feeling and New Kid in Town it certainly was turning out to be One of These Nights – of course they played that!

Interacting with the audience, bassist Trev Newnham filled us in on the early days of The Eagles in between songs. This amazingly talented group musicians looked like they were having fun which always makes a better experience for the audience and the first hour flew by finishing with Get Over It.

The second half began with Wasted Time, we had a singalong to Lyin’ Eyes and Take it to the Limit. The beautiful Desperado was followed by Life in the Fast Lane which finally got the audience up on their feet. No one will ever do Rocky Mountain Way like Joe Walsh but Mike played and sang a superb version which made it his own. They finished with the audience up on their feet again singing and dancing along to Heartache Tonight. There was only ever going to be one song as the encore with its long acoustic/electric intro… welcome to Hotel California – you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave! And I didn’t want to!

This was an amazing night, I enjoyed every minute of it and as they said they will be back next year, I for one will be sat in the audience.

Before the show and during the interval there is access to two bars in The Charter Theatre which is the perfect size for that intimate gig experience plus the acoustics are brilliant.

Best place to park for any event at Preston Guildhall is on the recently refurbished Bus Station which recently won an award for being ranked as one of the better car parks in UK. The parking is £3.20 (2-4 hrs) or £4.00 (up to 12 hrs) if you wish to go for a meal at one of Preston’s amazing eateries. Access to the Guildhall is via the 1st floor and is all undercover.

Rating: 5/5
